On 1 February 2016, there was a recall issued in the USA and Mazda stopped selling all new CX-5's as a result. The recall was issued because there is a risk of a fire/explosion if the vehicle is rear-ended and the fuel filler pipe is ruptured. A recall has not yet been issued in Canada even though the problem exists here as well.
Update from Feb 9, 2016: I phoned Transport Canada subsequent to my original posting. It turns out they issued a recall the same day as the U.S.; it just wasn't as well advertised. My local Mazda dealer has been very proactive and will be doing the recall work very soon.
Update from Mar 13, 2016: Mazda completed the recall in a very timely manner. Impossible to tell whether or not they fixed the problem unless someone crashes into my vehicle from behind. If it doesn't catch fire and explode then one can assume they did fix the problem. According to the invoice, the repair involved removing a bolt securing the fuel filler pipe bracket and adding a protective film and undercoating spray to the area.
