When I bought the car only the right headlight was working and this month it stopped working but it has its moments when it works and doesn't work on and off for a short period of time.
So when I noticed both DRLs were not running with a car that has only done 29,000 KMs, and as it was only 7 months out of warranty, I was pretty angry. Contacted my Mazda dealer about this with the usual response "oh... never heard of that problem before". I informed them that this is a world wide problem on this model and year and that it was impossible that they did not know about this faulty component. I then kindly asked them to cover the cost of fitting two new head light assemblies under warranty.
When they realized that I knew more about this issue than they were willing to admit, they said they would contact Mazda head office and ask if it could be repaired under "Good Faith".
I received a call back the next day to say they will replace both headlight assemblies at no cost to me. As you can imagine, i was very happy and appreciated the reply.
Thank you Mazda for stepping up and taking ownership of a major problem with the running light design. I guess the moral of this story is to say, go prepared with all the information you can find to prove it is not a normal Wear & Tear issue and ask nicely. The dealers are just the messenger so no need to get angry with them.
