We bought this car in January, it really hasn't done many miles yet. I went on holiday to the west country for a few days. The first night the car was parked outside. In the morning we got up to find the sunroof with a big hole in it. Called Mazda First. Then called the police. At first we thought it must have been vandalized. The policeman said the way the glass was all pointing upward indicated an explosion from within. No damage anywhere else on the vehicle, nothing inside the vehicle, no footprints or hand prints on the vehicle. The CCTV footage has been checked and no one went near the vehicle. The Mazda went off to the garage as arranged with Mazda First. It was there they told me to take it. The guy in there has sent me a report to say that in his opinion this was not caused by an external force.
This is his comment "Having inspected your vehicle the glass in my opinion shattered and was facing upward Therefore would suggest that a force inside caused the sunroof glass to shatter, there were no marks visible on the sunroof blind, which would suggest the sunroof was under too much tension causing glass to shatter. Due to you needing to return home we had no option but to remove the remainder of the glass".
I have been on to Mazda customer services and presented all the evidence I have from the CCTV footage, the police and the garage chap who Mazda sent me to. Mazda say this is not a warranty item and will do nothing to fix it.
Just want to put this out to the public in case anyone else has a similar experience. All I can say is thank goodness I was not driving at the time it exploded or we may have had more to worry about than just a smashed sunroof.
Update from May 8, 2015: Sunroof finally replaced! Mazda still refuse to pay for it and say it is not a warranty item. They say they have no record of any other Mazda sunroof exploding. I just hope it does not happen again but to be safe I am keeping the internal cover pulled.
