My family and I were driving home when were heard what sounded like a gun shot and glass shattering. We were driving approx. 50 mph and the temperature was approx 45 degrees. It was a clear sunny afternoon approx. 3:30. We were not following anybody and not a thing in the sky.
Thankfully the shade was pulled and no glass entered the car. When we reached home I immediately called the dealer whom we purchased vehicle from. We have purchased several vehicles from this dealer and value their service and recommendations. So I was surprised when they said this might not be covered under warranty and said I should contact Mazda. I called Mazda immediately and talked to a rep (Kevin) who was very helpful. He said I should take it to a dealer and have their warranty person look at glass and they could decide if under warranty. Mazda does not have anyone that makes that determination. Kevin also said that if not under warranty I could approach my insurance and if their claims person determined it was a Mazda issue they would work with them.
I have an appointment with local dealer tomorrow. I will follow up with what happens and how this turns out.
As far as pictures I have none. Had it covered with plastic before I thought about pictures. Plan on getting pictures when plastic is off at dealer. That being said, it looks blown out like pictures I have seen on internet. Almost like it warped and blew from the inside of the vehicle out. Most of the glass stayed in place though totally shattered.
Update from Mar 22, 2015: After talking to Mazda I was told to take to dealer. Wife took to Dealer the following Monday. They looked at sunroof and determined roof would be covered under warranty. There were no discussions or lengthy phone call to Mazda. They called the next day and said they would take care of everything. They had new roof installed by end of week. Great service and great work! :)
