Couldn't go up a slight incline without that obnoxious noise. It was still under warranty at the time. Dealer claimed that Ford/Mazda (Yes...your Mazda is a Ford Ranger) said it was a common complaint and that it was normal, wouldn't damage the engine, and to ignore it. Funny though, they wouldn't put it in writing (Hmmm, I wonder why?). I had the dealer back the timing off a little. (They don't like to play with the computer, but will if you press 'em.) The timing change helped a lot, but not 100%. I eventually switched to "plus" grade gas. Between the two, it runs great now! (Still have the truck. 60,000 miles down the road)
