Have a 2007 Lincoln and experienced the sudden engine surge while braking. I found out that it was possible to push down on both the accelerator and brake pedal at the same time especially when the pedals are about the same level. I would just slide my foot over to put on the brake but if you didn't move the shoe far enough over onto the brake pedal you would push on both. The harder you pushed on the brake you were also pushing on the gas pedal. This happened twice within a couple of days before I figured out what was happening. It was winter and I had wide snow boots on. I solved the problem by moving the seat back a bit and raising the pedals This brings the brake pedal up higher than the gas pedal so you are inclined to put your foot more to the middle of brake pedal. Have not had a problem since. .
