The connectors used for the coil (coil on Plug) are very low quality. These need to work, period. The retention latch is protected so they cannot be broken when removing the connector to replace a failed coil. Anyone who has had one of these 4.6L knows the coils fail all the time. I have replaced 2 so far in only 30,000 miles.
The latch on the connector broke when being removed in cold weather. This just cracked. The design prevents overtravel of the connector latch, so it is fairly difficult to break them during normal service. However the material does not seem hold up when being serviced in cold temperatures. It was below freezing during this exercise.
These connector housings are not easily found. I taped the connector to the coil, which is not a great method to keep this intact. It will need to be replaced to be reliable.
