My car has been in the shop more times then I can count. I had just had the entire tranny rebuilt, got the car back after 2.5 months in the shop and the internet/hot spot system went bad, and then I noticed this knocking, loud noise on a cold start. My car was in the shop for almost 2 weeks. I got it back with a new internet system but am waiting on the phasers because they are back-ordered. This is beyond ridiculous.
I am a livery/limousine driver in and around the NYC/NJ area. I tend to put 70000 miles per year on vehicles in urban and suburban areas. I spend half my day in traffic at times.
The vehicle developed an engine knocking sound. I left it at the dealership on June 13th and its still there. The dealership states back-ordered parts. The cause they say is the cam phasers. The dealership is basically replacing the phasers, the timing chain and many other items.
Google "ecoboost knocking sound" and there are many videos and articles on this issue which have been happening since 2011. I was surprised to see it going on in the 2nd generation of Ecoboost engines.
If you drive professionally my opinion is this vehicle isn't ready for prime-time or any type of fleet work. The transmission failed at 75000 miles and it took 3 weeks to replace. On the 2016 Suburban the transmission failed at 90000 and the trans was replaced in one day. Then 10000 miles later the engine develops a knocking sound, its been a month and still not fixed.
Wait until the 4th model year, 2021, to consider this vehicle. Currently its not ready for fleet work.
Update from Jul 10, 2019: I've been told to prevent this again to change the oil every 5000 miles with a high quality synthetic like Mobil 1. However, I have changed the oil every 7000 miles. I also noted this knocking sound developed in other ecoboost engines way sooner than 85000 miles.
Again, too many big issues for fleet work...
