Under normal braking the brake lights would not come on. But luckily I was able to fix it for $0 by taking the brake switch off from the rear of the brake peddle and taking it apart and then bending the contacts inside so they would touch sooner. Just don't bend them too far or the brake lights will stay on after braking. some adjustments may have to be done to get it just right.
