Traveling daytime on a flat, dry Interstate. I was in the far left lane and approaching a tractor trailer, who was one lane over to my right. Just as I was abeam to his cab, my car JAMMED ON THE BRAKES HARD, and I went from 70mph to 40mph in about 2-3 seconds. I had the cruise control on and there was no warning on this happening. There were no vehicles in my lane for at least 1/2 mile or more.
What I think happened is, the Sun had cast a shadow off of the truck and into my lane and the safety system that activates panic braking, must have thought there was an object in front of the car. Well, there wasn't and it scared the crap out of me! Had there been a car close behind me, this would have CERTAINLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT.
I reported this to NHTSA on their website, shortly after it happened, but was not contacted for any follow up questions. I really wish they would have downloaded the black box and tried to figure out what happened. It was not driver input that caused this event.
