I bought an 06 Lincoln Mart Lt pick up with all the bells and whistles with only 54k miles on it. Its been maintained by the dealership and all records prove that. After only driving the truck for 5k I noticed a very faint ticking noise which was very hard to hear but I took it to the shop any how because I didn't want it to become an issue later on. After taking it to the shop the mechaince said it sounded like a sprag gear but after further research and dropping the pan I found I nice big chunk of metal. After looking at the diagram I discovered it was the snap ring for the clutch drum. this truck wasn't used for towing or anything extraneous that would make it malfunction. After browsing the internet I found the 4R75W transmission is used commonly in the Ford F-150 series and many people have the same problem I have now. It amazes me how Ford could put a product out knowing it has been reported with massive failure all due to the same part (ie: clutch drum being made out of thin soft metal allowing the snap ring to wear through the manufactured seating grove.)
I would never buy another Ford especially on the grounds that they claim to be the best built truck, and for a part to just break due to design proves Ford has a lot to learn about craftsmanship (maybe they should take a note from Toyota.) But next time I'm getting a Chevrolet.
