Lincoln Ls '05 with Eagle GT hr 225/55 16, numerous flat tires on all 4, some tires as many as three nails or screws. Steel belts unable to resist puncture. All filled with slime now. Lots of tread left. -won't balance, shudders at 70mph. -pulls to the left. Tried alignments and swapping tires and wheels all around. No change.
The left rear wheel/tire assembly failed to hold air. A local tire merchant said that this is caused by the chrome plating separating from the aluminum alloy wheel. The dealer and Lincoln-Mercury said that the failure was due to brake dust getting on the outside of the wheel. They claimed that this was not a defect in the product and refused a warranty claim. They were unable to explain how dust on the outside of the wheel could cause the surface inside the tire to fail and leak air until the tire was flat.
