The contact owns a 2007 Kia Sportage. While driving 60 mph, the accelerator pedal locked up and would not release. As a result, the vehicle would not decelerate. The contact slammed on the brakes and slowed the vehicle down to 25 mph through a red light. The vehicle rolled into a parking lot and was still moving when the contact shifted the gear into park. She applied the emergency brake in order to stop the vehicle. The dealer stated that a piece of plastic from the accelerator cable failed and caused the accelerator pedal to lock. The vehicle has been repaired, but the dealer cannot guarantee that the failure will not recur. The failure mileage was 13,500. Updated 7/9/09 updated 07/17/09.
