Just after my pricey car repair problems seemed over, I noticed a groaning, whining sound when turning the steering wheel. It was also a little hard to turn the car. After using the totally trustworthy research method of "Ask Yahoo," I guessed that power steering was somehow involved. An email to my dad resulted in more advice: look at the power steering fluid levels and belts.
Upon opening the hood, I could clearly see that the fluid level in the power steering reservoir was well below the "min" line. I added more fluid the next morning and the car drove fine 3 short trips: approximately 25 miles. Just as I pulled in my parking space at the end of the day, I heard the sound again. Upon looking at the fluid levels the next morning, they were again well below "min," despite my adding of fluid 24 hours earlier. I took it to a Kia dealer, who "found power steering rack and hi-pressure leaking" and quoted $1900-2200 to repair it. I'm having my dad take a look at it first.

Steering would stop responding for a second or two in a hard corner. Think about this on a freeway.
