The check engine light came one, which I ignored, since my car has a reoccurring problem with the check engine light coming on for no real reason. However, I noticed rough idling (when waiting at stoplights) and a groaning sound coming from the gas cap area when the car was turned off. One day, after adding gas to the tank, the car refused to start. I took it to a mechanic, who read 2 codes on it: fuel trim and emissions/vapor leak.
He first replaced spark plugs and wires. This did not solve the problem. When I returned, the mechanic replaced the fuel pump. This also did not solve the problem. By now, only the large emissions leak problem was reading and I had spent $900 on things that didn't solve the issue. After one more diagnostic, the mechanic said replacing the solenoid would solve the problem and quoted me a $400 price. Instead, my dad replaced it for free and even paid for the part. Thanks, Dad! Replacing the solenoid seems to have solved the issue.
