So I bought my 2012 Soul in the spring of 2016 with 56,000 miles on it. Both key fobs were in good shape or so I thought. The rubber buttons were a little cracked, but everything worked fine. Fast forward just 2.5 years and ~50,000 miles and the primary key fob broke. The MINUSCULE little fragile metal piece holding the metal blade to the plastic body completely cracked and broke off, releasing the key blade from the rest of the fob. Dealership said it'd be a minimum of $260 or so for a new fob, plus whatever to program it. I was hesitant to spend that much, so we just used the secondary spare keyfob for the time being. It didn't take but a few months for that little metal piece to crack as well, and the rubber buttons completely deteriorated as well on both fobs. All inside of 3 years of ownership.
I got fed up, and bought a few replacement key fob shells off Amazon for $10 apiece, and very carefully cut the old ones open and swapped the chip, battery, and the key blade over to the new shells and they worked like new. However, once assembled, you really have to glue the two new halves together well or they can come apart easily if you're not careful. Still, $10 beats $260+ every time.
If you own a Soul, MAKE SURE to have a spare key fob handy for when this inevitably happens to you.
