If I had been driving highway, there would likely have been a pileup with likely fatalities. Car stopped abruptly, with no time to pull off road, driving 35 mph country road. My mechanic spent a day trouble shooting any possible causes, was not the battery or the alternator. With nearly a full tank of gas the fuel pump was not getting gas to the engine. Even if he did get the car started, there was still the inevitability it would fail, always the risk of a pile up. He did the research and discovered this KIA internal service bulletin (SC 074).
"campaign to replace the fuel pump motor sub-assembly in 2008-2009 Rondo LX / EX vehicles with the 2.4 (1-4), built between 11/5/2007 - 7/12,2008. All of these vehicles must have their fuel pump motors replaced unless previously... you should know that these vehicles may exhibit the illumination of the check engine warning P2191 (System too lean at higher load) / P2187 (System too lean at idle) diagnostic trouble codes or may exhibit a longer than normal start-up time. The cause of the check engine warning lamp illumination / extended cranking is due to poor internal contacts within the electric fuel pump motor, which will result in a reduction of fuel volume over time. KIA is replacing the electronic fuel pump sub-assembly to correct this condition."
There were 2 recalls covering the 2008 -2009 Rondo's in the USA and 1 in Canada for 2007 and 2008. None of these included my vin# even though the Campaign Service Bulletin clearly stated ALL of these vehicles needed the replacement. As of this moment KIA is refusing to replace it. When I filed my complaint with NHTSA, they explained that it is up to the manufacturer to determine the scope of the recall, regardless of how many actual vin#'s are impacted and that mine might be recalled in the future (or not). If I paid to have the replacement done or hired a lawyer to take them to court (neither could I seriously afford) there is no guarantee I would be reimbursed. This is definitely "up a creek without a paddle!"
