I bought this car brand new in 2012 and I've been it's only owner ever since. I've had it regularly serviced with mechanics that I trust its entire life. At 112k miles I was driving along the highway when it sounded like something snapped under the hood and suddenly I could not get my car to accelerate almost at all. Think 0-60 in two minutes.

I had it towed to a dealer and they told me straight that the engine was completely blown and that my only option was to either scrap it or buy a new engine. Kicker was that all KIA engines this size were on a huge backorder (probably because everyone else's engines are blowing up). I was told a lot of these engines were getting replaced under a recall/lawsuit (and they were) just not my specific model.

The only engine the dealer offered me was an extremely overpriced used one, but this was at the peak of the used car frenzy and a replacement car of similar mileage would have cost me about the same, so I made probably one the worst decisions of my life and ordered the engine with the promise of roughly 5 days for delivery and work.

-Not sure if what comes next should be separate complaints, but it's mostly a rant about the dealer more than anything-

Close to three weeks later I'm told the engine that eventually arrived had been put in and was knocking really bad (yet another junk KIA motor) and they used my warranty to have it replaced.

After more than 6 weeks of having no car, bumming rides, and missing work, I finally get my car back. I'm miserable, but glad its over with. Less than two months later I take it in for routine inspection and lo and behold, my mechanic tells me its burning oil. I now have to take it back to the same dealer, who swears up and down that it wasn't burning oil when they put it in, to have it replaced for a third time.

I'll update when I know how this inevitable debacle goes.

I was driving on the highway when suddenly my check engine light started blinking and a huge amount of smoke started coming from the hood of my car. I immediately pulled over. I tried putting in some oil and it didn't fix anything. I had it towed to a mechanic who inspected it and let me know that the car had thrown a piston through the engine and there was a giant hole in it. It needs to be replaced and the price I'm being quoted is $7500, since engine costs are extraordinarily high right now. That is equal to the cost of the car.

There was no accident and nothing that could have prevented this - besides Kia installing engines that aren't faulty. I saw that several other Kia models from 2013 have been recalled for this EXACT issue. I'm unsure why Rios are the exception if this was able to just happen to me out of nowhere. Now I need a new car on top of the 2+ years of payments I still have left on this one. I'm waiting for a call back from Kia customer service. I'm hoping they will do the right thing and help me, but I'm not very confident in that.

I was driving down a back road when I heard awful noises coming from the my 2013 Kia Rio. There were no lights that came on before or at this point to indicate engine failure. I was able to to coast to the side of the road safely. I check under the hood and there was a lot of steam coming out of there. I think if I had gone any further there may have been a fire. Thank goodness I have AAA. I called them and they sent a tow truck out to tow me to the nearest garage. At that garage the mechanic there stated that he thought the motor was a goner. He would check it out in a day or two. I checked back with him and sure enough the motor is shot. When I bought this vehicle in 2013 it was not new, it had about 13,000 miles on it. So no warranty unless I wanted to purchase the extended warranty. I had heard that Kia's new car warranties covered 10 years or 100,000 miles.

So I thought why bother. This is almost new so it should last me 10 years. Now at 7 years and 66,000 miles later the engine is gone. I just paid this vehicle off. Now I can't even trade it in for another. At this point I don't have another vehicle to drive. I have to rent a car to get back and forth to work and to appointments, until I can get this fixed which I hear will cost me about $3500.00 if not more. How can I be sure that the motor that I get to replace and install will last me another 3 years or more? Should I just buy another car? Not a Kia. You bet that I will buy the extended warranty on the next vehicle even it it almost new. Wow so not impressed right now. I think that Kia should have recalled this engine if they knew there was a problem with them.
