This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Experienced the death wobble. Front tires began to oscillate violently causing loss of steering control on a highway. Went on for ~20 seconds, almost ran off the road and would have crashed. No indications prior to event, smooth highway speed driving right up to extreme violent shaking. Fighting with the wheel to steer to stay on the road was ineffective. The only thing that saved us was it suddenly stopped on its own. Before this event there were several short, less severe instances of wobbling.
Vehicle has been leading to the right since I bought the vehicle. It is now very worse, and has cause a near miss collision with right side object. There is now severe drifting to the right, the original dealer has denied the issue since day one. Now it has been confirmed by another dealer that the steering gear box needs to be replaced by the new steel product steering gear box.
When driving at a speed of 60 or higher the Steering wheel of the jeep begins to shake or shimmy. When driving on the highway I have to slow down well below the speed limit to get the shaking to stop. I-??ve taken it to a independent Jeep repair shop and they have confirmed the steering wheel shakes.
When on the highway going over 55 MPH and hitting a bump the steering wheel and entire vehicle begins to move rapidly and violently from side to side. This causes your vehicle to feel like it's losing control. The only way to stop this from continuing is to slow the vehicle down significantly. This presents a significant danger of losing control because of the shaking or being hit from behind on the highway due to slowing down significantly. The dealer has attempted to repair this defect twice within the last 2 months by replacing the steering damper and it is still occurring. No warning messages are illuminated when this occurs.

My Jeep wanders tremendously, at times it-??s hard to keep it on the road. And sometimes it will veer to the left or right unexpectedly. I-??ve almost hit two incoming cars because of this. This problem needs to be fixed on this model vehicle immediately or someone is going to get hurt or killed. Sometimes if you hit a bump the steering will vibrate tremendously until you come to a stop. There-??s no way to control the vehicle when this happens.
Vehicle engine light came on and then gave me a service shifter alarm error. With the error I lost power steering traveling thru the mountains on the interstate in the snow. The dash lights started flickering followed by numerous fault codes.
purchased vehicle in sept 2019 and had no issues until recently. Hitting bumps on freeway causes extreme shaking which lasts upwards of 6 to 10 seconds. Having this occur on icy roads can result in total loss of stability. I've taken this into the dealership already once, and issue still occurs. From research it looks like this issue has been present in jeeps for decades. Why hasn't the NHTSA forced jeep to notify the public of the issue?
While in 38 degree weather, the steering wheel locked up when turning to the left. Turning to the right was unaffected. This occurred immediately after engine start. I used a far larger amount of force than usual to push the steering wheel in an attempt to get it to unlock. This eventually did work, but every time I tried to turn to the left, the steering wheel felt like it was catching on something and required more force than I was accustomed to. This continued to happen though it eased as the drive went on and the car warmed up. The next day at around 35 degree weather the same thing occurred though not as bad as that first instance. It kept feeling stuck when turning left and the more I pushed it the more it eased. This did not happen over the summer when the temperature was repeatedly over 60 degrees. The binding occurred at both high and low speed.
at 70mph or higher driving over rough highway transition joints will cause steering wheel and entire car to shake violently until slowing down to 60 mph
While driving with traffic at highway speeds, bumps in the road surface cause the Front End of my 2019 JEEP WRANGLER to bounce violently and I have to reduce the speed to around 45 MPH to have the suspension return to normal. I have brought the vehicle to Golling Jeep Dealership 3 times. They replaced the Steering Damper in May of 2021which temporarily resolved the issue. I brought the car back in August and September where the dealership reports they could not duplicate the failure. In a recent Detroit Free Press Article, this condition was called an "Alleged Death Wobble". Golling tells me there is nothing wrong. There was no accident, no known damage and there was no warning of any kind. I just watch for bumps and drive slower - not with the speed of traffic on I 696 in Oakland County Michigan. I believe this is Unsafe and I told Golling's Service team the same. What Can I do? [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
Subsequent to my yearly annual service which included a tire rotation, my 2019 Jeep Wrangler Sport developed the "Jeep Death Wobble". At speeds in excess of 60 mph and with a certain series of road bumps, the Jeep begins to violently wobble until speed is reduced to approximately 58mph.
Loss of some electrical power, including power steering; Check engine light, other warnings are triggered. Can Bus error. Engine fails to turn off. Gear-shift problems. Happens repeatedly
I own a 2019 Jeep Rubicon and the steering wheel rotates violently (~25? back and forth) while driving at any speed and when I hit a bump on the road. Even a small bump on the road causes this problem. I have researched this and some Jeep websites call it a -??death wobble-??. 25? violent steering wheel rotation at 70 mph is very startling it is an extremely unsafe. It almost caused me to crash on more than 3 occasions. There are no apparent recalls about this issue but this problem is reported on several Jeep websites. Are there any plans to implement any sort of safety warning or a recall about this problem? Thank you and please keep me posted.
It moves from one side to the other in the lane, its not easy to control. you need to drive with both hands all the time and be extra careful you don't enter a different lane. it;'s happen several times. it doesn't feel safe and looks like i'm not the only one.
The check engine light came on one evening. The next morning during driving the dashboard flashed a "Service Shifter" warning. Then a series of other warnings all light up. The dashboard flashed like it was malfunctioning. The Jeep lost power steering and stuck in the current gear I was in. The vehicle had to be towed to the dealership. They have had it now for four days. And, they have no idea what's wrong with it.
The steering on JL 2019 has been a problem from the start. The steering wheel damper was replaced and the steering is still a problem. There is too much play in the steering which has been the cause of several potential accidents especially at highway speeds.
Steering has gotten extremely sloppy and pulls. Took it to get an alignment and it turns out the steering box is the culprit. There seeks to be many issues with this. Needs to be recalled. Could cause an accident
When driving 70 miles an hour and hit a bridge seam which intersect the highway at 45 degree angle the car goes into a violent death wobble. We have had 2 Jeep service departments look at the issue stating nothing is wrong with the car. We are still experiencing this death wobble
While driving normally my dash lights and info display start running a sequence that goes through a multitude of warnings and service checks on the vehicles systems, I lose power steering for a bit then lights go out, but check engine light and ess stay on. When remote starting my Jeep the same thing kind of happens only the warning lights do not go out quickly and I cannot shift out of park to drive the vehicle, after some time usually a 1/2 to a full day of waiting the lights go out execept for the check engine light and ess. I took it to the dealer that I bought it from and they told me it was a loose negitive battery terminal connection, about three miles down the road it did the lights and steering thing again.
