The vehicle was brand new. For the first week, everything seemed fine. After about 200 miles the coolant temperature began to rise above normal. Radiator fan would go into high. Shortly thereafter it would return to normal. Eventually, after the vehicle was driven for 15 minutes the temperature would creep all the way up to overheat in about 30 seconds. The temperature warning would sound for 10 seconds and then the temperature would return to normal.
This cycle would repeat continuously every 20-30 minutes. Eventually, the radiator fan would always be on high and the vehicle would not go into auto start/stop. Eventually, the cycle got worse, the overheating would stay on and the engine light came on. This all happened over about 2 weeks - minimal driving over the Christmas holiday. Returned vehicle to dealer on Jan 3. Originally said it was a faulty radiator cap until I advised them to let it run for 15 minutes and then test drives for 15 minutes at which point they experienced the problem. Diagnosed as a cracked head gasket. Currently under repair at the dealer.
