Patriot Latitude 2.4L I4

  • CVT transmission
  • 136,829 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

A month before this, the transmission had trouble finding that sweet spot the CVT has for your given throttle input and road conditions. A week before total failure, one dealer (Wickstrom CJD) replaced the Power Transfer Unit (sends power to the rear wheels when needed). After taking the on the road (55-60mph road in front of this dealer) the transmission would "hunt" when given a solid throttle input. If I was part part throttle, usually the RPMs will sit in the 2500-3000RPM range until you're up to speed or change throttle input. This was moving about 3-400RPM. Vehicle would feel as if a brake was being lightly applied and then released.

Tuesday, Oct 3rd, after 5 miles into driving to work, the trans was slipping so bad that it was having difficulty maintaining 40mph. Part throttle meant the RPMs were over 3,000RPM. Full throttle and the engine would bounce off the rev limiter. during this, there was hardly any noticeable power gains. Normally, you can give full throttle inputs and the transmission will determine where to be so as to hold the RPMs at 6,000RPM just before redline and never bouncing off the limiter (power band all the time, just how the CVT works). after about 8 miles, I had to stop for a traffic light, once the light changed, I accelerated and the vehicle felt as if I didn't give it any input and crawled across the intersection before realizing there was any throttle. Once it did, we were right back to where we were before. Pulled over to a dead end street, once stopped again while still in drive, the engine RPM's dropped below 500RPM (yes, really). I noticed that and threw it in park before the engine stalled out. Shut it off for 10 minutes, restarted and problem went away.

Vehicle was towed to Elgin CJD where it was determined the transmission had failed completely. Trans and Torque Converter was replaced under the manufacturers extended lifetime warranty. Only had to pay the deductible. Dealer did not know what the cause of failure was. New transmission and it drives better than it has in at least 2 years. Fluid and filter was replaced somewhere around 60-70k miles.

Patriot Limited

  • CVT transmission
  • 45,000 miles

The transmission has overheated twice on us on long distance drives forcing us to pull over on a major busy highway and wait for it to cool down in order to continue on our way.

In addition, the other safety issue that happens sporadically with the transmission and until today continues to happen despite some minor repairs/maintenance is that it slips on city streets.as well. While on a red light, when we try to go the transmission slips preventing the car to switch gears. It doesn't go faster than 15-20 miles an hour, doesn't matter how much we accelerate, the speed doesnt increase and the RPM gauge goes up. We have to also pull over, turn it off and on again.

I have taken it to 5 different mechanics and none can diagnose the problem because their computers don't get any error codes.

The sad thing is that I purchased this car with my only savings for my daughter who is going to college up North to have peace of mind that she will be okay, but now I don't even have savings or peace of mind Chrysler's techs state since the dealership computer reports do not show any error codes than the car is working as it should and of course they are not authorizing a replacement for the transmission. I contested their decision with their customer service case manager that was helping with this and he told me there was nothing they could do if the Chrysler techs had already made their decision, that he could not over-right it.

One of the most frustrating situations I have ever experienced in my life!! I feel helpless!!

Patriot Sport 4 cyl 3.2L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 79,000 miles

had to take a day off work, stuck at home, wont send a loaner car to my house so I have to get a friend

to drive me to the dealership before 6pm since I had to get the deathtrap towed to the dealer..

Almost got killed on the expressway when this piece of crap died after the transmission slipped.. Very dangerous and unreliable vehicle. If the transmission just quits before 100k miles this thing wasn't even worth it.

Also when I got this car and traded my old one in I changed my mind because jeep screwed me on the trade in for a basic stripped down jeep, nothing special. Then after 2 days they said they sold my old car.. Criminal activity!!! I have 3 days to terminate the agreement and they lied and broke the law.. Horrible and dishonest. So I had no choice in the matter I needed a car for work so I got a basic jeep with a full warranty at a high interest rate when I had perfect credit. I got totally screwed!!! Never again will I buy a jeep in my lifetime. Now I'm waiting to see if I get screwed on this so called full warranty and with my luck I probably will.. Nothing but disappointment with jeep.. terrible company to deal with.

Patriot Sport 2.0L

  • Automatic transmission

This is my 3rd complaint on the same car, it typically happens when I'm taking off slowly or up a ramp. It just sucks and I fear a rebuilt transmission is in the horizon. I'm collecting cans and scrap metal as we speak.

Patriot

  • CVT transmission
  • 48,000 miles

I first took my vehicle to the dealership in May 2014 with the complaint that I felt the transmission was slipping. While driving at possibly 35 mph, I would notice my car start to shake and feel as if it were choking down/stalling. This happened repeatedly. The RPM would jump up and down, but no acceleration. This was significantly scary, since I had my kids in the car with me. I took the vehicle to my local dealership and they could not find anything wrong - other than a transmission dipstick needing replacement! The issue has been going on since then but has gotten progressively worse. I had to start driving the car in manual transmission to ensure the vehicle would not stall out on me. Now, even in manual transmission, the engine slips, and barely accelerates. I am afraid to enter any intersection for fear that the car will choke down and my kids and I would be hit.

I have researched this specific issue and see plenty of complaints about it. I cannot understand why the manufacturer would not remedy this for the consumer. I WAS a die hard Jeep fan. I had my Cherokee Laredo to almost 200K miles. I will never purchase another Jeep again for myself or my kids. I am also telling my friends and family (who love my Patriot - my nieces, especially) to avoid this car. It is an accident waiting to happen. I suppose the manufacturer will not take this seriously until someone dies. I wonder what types of vehicles they use personally for themselves and their families.
