A month before this, the transmission had trouble finding that sweet spot the CVT has for your given throttle input and road conditions. A week before total failure, one dealer (Wickstrom CJD) replaced the Power Transfer Unit (sends power to the rear wheels when needed). After taking the on the road (55-60mph road in front of this dealer) the transmission would "hunt" when given a solid throttle input. If I was part part throttle, usually the RPMs will sit in the 2500-3000RPM range until you're up to speed or change throttle input. This was moving about 3-400RPM. Vehicle would feel as if a brake was being lightly applied and then released.
Tuesday, Oct 3rd, after 5 miles into driving to work, the trans was slipping so bad that it was having difficulty maintaining 40mph. Part throttle meant the RPMs were over 3,000RPM. Full throttle and the engine would bounce off the rev limiter. during this, there was hardly any noticeable power gains. Normally, you can give full throttle inputs and the transmission will determine where to be so as to hold the RPMs at 6,000RPM just before redline and never bouncing off the limiter (power band all the time, just how the CVT works). after about 8 miles, I had to stop for a traffic light, once the light changed, I accelerated and the vehicle felt as if I didn't give it any input and crawled across the intersection before realizing there was any throttle. Once it did, we were right back to where we were before. Pulled over to a dead end street, once stopped again while still in drive, the engine RPM's dropped below 500RPM (yes, really). I noticed that and threw it in park before the engine stalled out. Shut it off for 10 minutes, restarted and problem went away.
Vehicle was towed to Elgin CJD where it was determined the transmission had failed completely. Trans and Torque Converter was replaced under the manufacturers extended lifetime warranty. Only had to pay the deductible. Dealer did not know what the cause of failure was. New transmission and it drives better than it has in at least 2 years. Fluid and filter was replaced somewhere around 60-70k miles.
