I was only able to pump 1/2 gallon of gas at a time into my Jeep before the gas pump would cut off. I tried turning the gas pump nozzle upside down, side to side, in a little, out a little etc. It took at least fifteen minutes at the gas pump each time and hoping that the gas tank wouldn't overflow, not to mention the upset customers in line behind me at the gas station. My mechanic ruled out every problem outside of the gas tank and said that the only resolution was to replace the gas tank because the faulty valves are inside the gas tank. And the Jeep dealership has the gas tank in stock. Wonder why??? Because it is a common problem with this Jeep!!! $1,200 to replace the gas tank on an eight year old vehicle with a trade-in value of $4,000 max. Ready to sell and I have lost my confidence in the Jeep brand.
FYI...This is the fifth Jeep in our family and will be the last.
Extremely annoying. Why no recall by now. Cannot fill up tank without shutoffs and gas spitting out. Takes forever. Problem ever since we bought the car used.
Update from Dec 14, 2015: Spent $286 and had evaporator canister replaced--no help, even worse.
All of a sudden I can no longer fill the gas tank, it just clicks off after a few seconds. I have had an infrequent problem in the past with the car stalling immediately after filling up, but this is new as of a few weeks ago. At first I thought it was the gas station, but a week later at a different station the same problem is occurring. It takes forever to fill up and as others have stated you must guess as to when the tank is actually full.
I pulled the EVAP canister off and may try replacing that as I did read that this may resolve the issue. I'll update this once I decide how to proceed with the results.
Well first off Chrysler is polish for BULLSHIT. Their vehicles are built with really sh*tty parts. My fuel tank clicks after pumping 10 to 20 cents of fuel so I only pump 5 to 10 bucks at a time so I won't freeze my ass off. The problem is the vent line that runs to the top of the fuel tank. It is NOT serviceable so you have to replace the tank. If you buy the tank from Chrysler it's $922, plus installation, which averages between 400-600 dollars depending on where you live. THIS IS NOT COVERED UNDER SH*TTY CHRYSLER WARRANTY.
I would recommend visiting CAR-PART.COM like I did. Go to this website and put your vehicle info in. It will search for a used tank for you and give you a part grade from A-F. GO WITH GRADE A IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT. I bought a grade A tank for $110. I will be installing it tomorrow evening and I will post an update to see if it fixes the problem.
When putting gas into the vehicle it appears that the automatic shutoff mechanism kicks in repeatedly; if I'm lucky, I may get $1.50 worth of gas in the vehicle before the mechanism engages but it usually much less, so you wait 10 - 15 seconds before depressing the gas handle. As a result, it takes a considerable amount of time to fill the tank. Also, you have to estimate when the tank is full since you can't rely on the automatic shutoff mechanism.
