CarComplaints.com Notes: On August 16th, 2012 Jeep stopped production of the the Jeep Liberty, marking the end of a troublesome journey for the SUV.

All in all, the 2012 Liberty actually excels off-road, but since 99% of drivers never take this thing off pavement, that becomes somewhat of a moot point. The Liberty suffers from the worst fuel economy in its class (16/22 MPG) and offers an uncomfortable ride with suspect braking ability.

Severe corrosion on both oil pan and transmission pan. This vehicle is less than 5 years old with only 36,000 miles. Loss of either fluid could cause engine - transmission failure on a highway leading to an unsafe situation.

I placed this vehicle's automatic transmission shifter, with the engine running into the park position on 05/20/17 at approx. 12:15 am. I sat in the vehicle for a few minutes. I exited drivers side, closed that door after placing patrol items onto the front seat. I moved to passenger front door, opened it and and retrieved a patrol bag and items from that seat. After closing passenger door and walking away from vehicle the shifter "moved" down into reverse. Was it in "false park"" then the Jeep to back up off concrete parking pad and into a shallow lagoon on fripp island, St. Helena, SC. The fripp island property owners association auto insurance company, travelers, totalled out the vehicle stating it was no longer safe to drive"

At 48K miles engine started having multiple cylinder missfires, too lean then too rich codes for cyclinders while traveling on the highway, brought to dealer, was charged $148 to replace O2 sensor. Drove vehicle out of the lot, and within five miles from dealer, experienced same trouble. After one and half weeks at the dealer, they had replaced 2 PCM modules, O2 sensors and then the catalytic converter. Vehicle was driven no less than 3 months and 5K driven miles after work was completed the engine started failing again with the same issue, stranding by disabled spouse 1400 miles away from home. Dealer now wants to remove engine head and rebuilt engine. Once was brought to the dealer, service agent told my spouse was advised that no transportation was hoping to be provided to her, since she was traveling with her service animal "a dog". even after they were advised of ada laws, and was told to drive the Jeep and have it towed back to the dealer at our expense. When I contacted doge Chrysler customer service, case number 30253034 I was told that they can't provide any assistance until the dealer diagnosed the issue, Jeep have been at the dealer for a week now, and service advise it sayd that is going to take another 2 days before they get it in the shop to look at it..

2012 Jeep Liberty, 55,000 miles. I stopped at a red light. When the light turned green I hit the gas to move forward and the truck went nowhere for about 5 seconds, when the transmission finally engaged. The truck jerked and I finally went forward. This truck has been checked with an independent mechanic then brought to the dealership as it is still under extended warranty. Very disappointing, as I love this truck. I guess I will be hesitant to buy another Jeep.

I had traveled about 500 miles and all of the lights concerning the 4 wd lit up on the dash and the RPM's jumped up over 3000 RPM, I was towing a trailer and using the towing mode as it says to in the manual, there were no Chrysler dealers open for doing service, I pulled over and shut off the trailer towing and went a ways further and the lights were still on so I pulled the fuse and continued along the lights slowly one by one shut off. I stopped in bloomington, Illinois at the Chrysler dealer the next day and they could not give a god answer for what had happened. I continued on to Florida to visit with my sons and the situation got worse it started acting like the engine was miss firing on a cylinder or two, Chrysler dealer in fl was too busy to check it out and wanted me to pay up front even though the power train is still under warranty til 100,000 miles. I left fl returning to il and had it checked by a friend who had a garage and his testing showed a bad modulator in the transmission, I took it back to the Chrysler dealer and they put it on their computer and dis some adjusting and told me to take it easy the transmission is very weak and needs repair but Chrysler will not do anything unless the transmission quits completely. I left il and returned to South Dakota and the transmission is no better but actually getting worse, I went to hot springs sd yesterday which is about a 60 mile one way trip, visited with friends for 4 hours and returned home and before I got back home all the lights for the 4 wd were on, I think Chrysler needs to take care of this problem before I am left stranded alongside a road someplace or have a wreck from the transmission gong out while driving. This is the worse Chrysler that I have ever owned and will be the last one if the problem is not corrected and soon.

While driving the ESC off came on and the Jeep driving strange. It is jerking when you are coming to a stop. Although you are driving in 2nd it is flashing 4wdl. The ESC off is flashing. It is scary driving when this is happening. Also since I bought this car new in 2012, I had to pay for the brake light to be change five times already. I think these Jeep have electrical problems.

The transmission fails to engage from neutral to first gear, or when slowing down and down shifting from second to first. When it does engage, it jolts forward at a higher speed which could a) cause me to hit another car; B) allow another car to hit me as I am not moving; C) roll backwards down a hill as the transmission did not engage and cause me to get into an accident. Jeep is aware of this problem, but is doing nothing to fix or recall the vehicle.

I am experiencing torque converter shudder at between 45 and 50 mph at 1500rpm or lower. I first reported this defect when the vehicle had about 800 miles on it. The vehicle feels like it's driving over rain grooves or rumble strips when I'm experiencing the problem. The issue is 100% reproducible. The dealership has insisted that this is a condition that affects all Jeep liberties called "exhaust drone." During one of my many service visits for one of my many other service issues, I had a rental 2012 Jeep Liberty that did not have this problem. Jeep customer care has been unsuccessful in even contacting the service manager at the dealership where I bought the vehicle because he does not return their calls. I am concerned that the torque converter will fail during regular use and leave me either stranded or cause an accident. Also, the vehicle intermittently shifts very rough, and on several occasions when I am starting the vehicle it surges forward or backward suddenly even when applying very little pressure to the gas pedal, and this is accompanied by a very loud knocking sound. Sometimes the vehicle makes noises between 15 and 25 mph, which I can only describe as a loud high pitched whining or warbling sort of noise (like a loose flywheel).

1) backed out of driveway and the transmission failed to engage then slammed into gear, 2) stopped at an intersection pressed on the throttle vehicle paused and then slammed into gear (has done this several times)and has continued this behavior intermittently. It has been to the dealership 5 times. Dealer and Chrysler state that this is because of the vehicle being on an incline and it has an electronic throttle and transmission state there is not a problem and they are not going to fix it the dealership (advantage Chrysler in mount dora Florida told me if I didn't like the response take it somewhere else. Each time it does this it slams into gear and puts stress on the U joints, drive shaft, and rear end not to mention the damage to the transmission. The vehicle still has less than 4000 miles on it.

The 2012 Jeep Liberty automatic transmission "clunks" severely when upshifting or downshifting. A loud "clunk" is noted at either the transmission or driveshaft U-joint. I took the vehicle to the Jeep dealership and technicians replicated the discrepancy. The technician also tried another vehicle (a different model with the same type transmission) that was on the lot and it too, had this loud "clunk". the dealership contacted Chrysler, and were told by Chrysler that Chrysler is aware of this problem, but has no "fix" or "repair" for this problem. One of these days, the transmission is going to fail or a U-joint is going to fail which could result in a serious accident. And Chrysler already knows about this discrepancy!!! this happened on a 2012 Jeep Liberty that is brand new and now has 5,000 miles on it and it continues to happen.
