This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
When refueling our 2007 Jeep Liberty, fuel overflows after fuel pump automatic shutoff is triggered. This overflow now occurs every time vehicle is refueled. No one is attempting to "top off" the fuel tank. The overflow causes a quantity of fuel, which I estimate at two to four cups, to spill on the side of the vehicle and onto the ground. This fuel overflow flaw creates an extreme fire hazard and environmental contamination risk. This flaw occurs in the Wrangler model of Chrysler Jeep products also, where a recall has been issued. The same flaw is occurring in many thousands of Jeep Liberty's as is evident by the huge volume of owner statements posted on many websites. This was an occasional problem that has now become consistent. It is impossible to predict and without a recall notice, consumers are unaware of this hazard. This flaw creates a safety hazard for the person refueling the vehicle and anyone nearby (specifically my children who are often with me when fueling our Jeep). The fuel spilled has caused property damage in the form of ruined clothing and shoes, and possibly damage to the vehicle as fuel runs down the side into crevices around the rear wheel and axle. Why would the manufacturer cover this flaw under warranty for one make and model, the Jeep Wrangler, and not cover the identical problem for another make and model, the Jeep Liberty? it's the same problem created by the same manufacturer.
Beginning at approximately 35,000 miles on the vehicle, fuel would spit-back immediately after the fuel nozzle shut off. The amount of fuel spit back was significant, drenching the lower half of the person fueling the vehicle. At first, we thought this might be an issue with the fueling pump, but found it repeated itself at every pump and at every station we utilized. It does not seem to depend on rate of fueling, as even attempting to fuel slowly results in a dangerous spit back of fuel and potential drenching of the individual. The vehicle was inspected by the dealer and a defective valve in the fuel tank was diagnosed as the cause of the problem. Interestingly, after reporting the labor charge of $200 to investigate the issue, we were told that they have seen a number of Jeep with this problem. One would think common problems could be found without this level of labor. The valve in question cannot be obtained as an individual unit and the entire fuel tank must be replaced at the cost of approximately $900. Given that numerous other Chrysler vehicles of this year, including Wrangler, Dodge durango, Liberty, and other models across the Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep brand exhibit this problem and that lacking significant moving parts, one cannot justify a fuel tank component failure after 35,000 miles, this issue is unquestionable a design failure. Given the immediate hazard of fire, long term health risks, and environmental impact of repeated events of fuel spit back from these vehicles requires intervention.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that the while refueling to capacity, the cap would not shut off the fuel, causing fuel to leak onto the ground. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and assisted the contact with repairs to the vehicle. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 36,000 and the current mileage was 88,000.
This is a fuel overflow issue. When I am fueling the Jeep as the tank gets full and the gas pump clicks off, fuel spills out of filler tube onto side of vehicle and the ground. This seems like a safety problem with raw gas all over the ground. When the Jeep was new this didn't happen, now it happens every time I fill the tank up.
Fuel spills out after filling up at gas station. I am not "topping off". I allow the pump to stop automatically while holding pump and a sizeable amount of gas gurgles out when it is done. Huge safety issue.
Fuel overflow issue. When fueling vehicle as the tank gets full and the gas pump clicks off, fuel spews out of filler tube onto side of vehicle and the ground. This seems like a safety and environmental issue. Happens every time filling up the tank. Dealer wanted $813 + tax to repair/replace fuel tank.
My girlfriends 2007 Jeep Liberty consistently over flows when refueling. I am an experienced mechanical engineer and after researching this problem I suspect this is a design flaw and a significant safety hazard. Strongly recommend you look at this right away.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Liberty. The contact was entering a parking space when the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer and they advised him that the fuel pump had failed and would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired for the fuel pump. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered a reimbursement. In addition, the contact stated that when driving at low speeds and attempting a turn, the steering would become hard to maneuver. The vehicle was later inspected by a dealer and they advised her that the rack and pinion and the power steering pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired for the pump alone. The failure mileage was approximately 38,000. Updated 06/16/11 updated 2/03/2012
Every time I fill my tank the pump will stop and about a half gallon of gas comes gushing out of the tank spilling on me, the car and the ground. I am not topping off. The pump stops and what seems to be extra gas literally explodes out of the tank.
My vehicle a 2007 Jeep Liberty spills fuel "spit-back" during fill-ups, just prior to the click of a full tank gas spits out and spray out of the gas tank.
2007 Jeep Liberty - fuel overflow issue. When fueling vehicle and gas pump kicks off, fuel spews out of filler tube onto side of vehicle and the ground. This is clearly a safety and environmental issue.
Gas spurts out of my 2007 Jeep Liberty fuel tank at every gas station when the tank is almost full. This is not due to human error, the gas pumps do not stop fast enough even when holding it in correctly. This appears to be a faulty gas neck or gas tank part for the 2007 Jeep Liberty.
Fuel overflows out of filler tube on 2007 Jeep Liberty each time I fill it up. Pumping fuel at a low rate doesn't solve problem. This occurs when attempting to fill the tank normally (not attempting to top of the tank after gas station pump shuts off) fuel overflow occurs at different pumps, so it is not unique to a particular gas station or pump. This appears to be a common issue on Jeep liberties and also other Dodge, Chrysler vehicles.
Filling up 2007 Jeep Liberty sport - Jeep overfills with normal pump usage spewing gasoline out of the vehicle and onto the ground. This happens with every fill.
