Their solution is to add a hitch to the back of my jeep. Mind you I cannot tow anything with my Jeep and living in the city of Chicago parking with a hitch is not fun.
This complaint is actually about Jeep's handling of the fuel tank recall on certain year Liberty vehicles. In response to a massive fine by the NHTSA, Jeep offered $100 gift cards as incentive for owners to take the vehicles into a dealership and have them inspected for a trailer hitch. I did this in November and called a month later asking if I needed to do something to get the gift card. I was told it was due to be shipped out in the middle of January. Well, here it is March 21. I called back today for at least the sixth time and was told the same thing as the previous time. The card is being processed and is actually sure to be delivered this week! I asked for a supervisor. She wasn't at her desk. Not sure where she went. She'll call me. Yeah right, a supervisor was supposed to call me after I called two or three times ago.
At this point I am certain that Jeep offered the gift cards with no intention of ever actually awarding them, thinking that people would forget or just drop it. Problem is, if that becomes known it renders the incentive for people to take their vehicles in to be inspected pretty useless. It's not even about the money, at this point I'm just really concerned that Jeep has become a completely shady company and this particular model is the last one I will own (I have had two Jeeps for 20 consecutive years now). I am calling NHTSA by the end of the week to report this obvious bait and switch tactic.
Recall took forever to come thru, then the parts took forever, finally got the hitch mounted by a Jeep dealer and then learn that this is still a safety issue that we the owner's have to wait for another recall. Geez. I will not let my child sit in the back seat now because of the possibility of being rear ended and having a fire in my vehicle. I may be paranoid but I rather be safe than sorry. Come on Jeep, your reputation is falling in the ranks.
The 2006 Jeep Liberty has an exposed gas tank behind the rear axle that can explode on rear-end impact. I've had this car for only a few months and am concerned about safety.
