Bought the GC used at one year. Really do like it a lot. Went to the post office and parked. Came back out, started the GC and the shifter would not shift out of Park and the Check Engine light was displayed. Weird I thought, so I turned it off, waited a minute and tried again with the same result. Called AAA and they were able to get it out of gear by inserting a small wire into the console to reset so they could tow it with the truck they had brought. Otherwise they would have had to get a different truck so as not to damage it.
I had the Jeep towed to the Dealer as the AAA guy thought maybe a sensor just needed to be reset. I have only owned Hondas for the past 35 years and have a high school friend who owns a Honda only shop so the Jeep purchase was an entirely new world to me. Jeep was towed to Dealer at about 1pm. I called later that afternoon to make sure they had everything they needed and they told me they were pretty sure it was there. Okay? Called Saturday afternoon and a man transferred me to a voicemail where I left my contact info just to be sure they had it, etc. No one called me back.
Called Monday and the person who answered my phone tried to give me to a service advisor who was not the one on my Jeep. Did get to speak to the SA assigned to my Jeep who told me that it needed a new electronic shift module and it would be about $700. She said she tried to enter it in the system every which way and it was not covered under the power train warranty. Also, there were none available in Kansas City and the part would have to come from St Louis. I asked why this part would fail and she did not know. I asked if she had seen any other GC's with this issue and she said no. I authorized repair.
Dealer called me on Tuesday and said GC was ready. I picked it up Wednesday morning. I will be the first to admit that I do not know as much as I should about cars but I do know the basics. My receipt reads :Shifter Transmission. How in the world is this not part of the power train? Every definition I read states that is should be including NHTSA. I filed a complaint on Jeep's website and the reply probably was the most maddening part of this entire event. It was obvious the author was using copy/paste and never read the details of my situation.
I know things happen to cars and don't expect them to run without proper maintenance and I am sure to have that done. I also know I am almost 3k miles out of the basic warranty on this but it really should be a power train item. Jeep has done nothing to keep me as a future customer and has really soured me on my purchase. I would rather drive a vehicle that isn't exactly what I would like knowing the manufacturer stands behind their product and also looks at individual incidents on their own merit than drive what I thought I wanted and be ignored.
