shifter-when you shift vehicle into park, maybe in reverse

I use my emergency brake by habit always thank God. I went into a retail store shopping ,when I came out I noticed my Jeep was still running. I got in and noticed it was in reverse, the car will not shut off when in reverse. It did not roll away because I had the emergency brake engaged. Another time I had to stop for gas, pulled up to the pump put the car in Park , or so I thought. As I opened the door to step out the vehicle was rolling backward. Engine did not shut off and I had not depress the emergency brake far enough. This could get real dangerous. The manufactor knows they have a problem, that's .why they changed the shifter in 2016!!! I mentioned this problem to the local Jeep dealer( Fitzgerald CDJ Palm Harbor, FL.) They told me they weren't aware of this problem and that I was the 1st person to mention it. PURE BS!

On 11/8, I put my car in park while it was running. My daughter and I exited the vehicle and walked approx 10 feet to the front door of her Dad's house. After waiting for her for approx. 2-3 mins to come out of the house, I noticed my Jeep had started to move by itself in reverse. I immediately ran to the car and attempted to gain entrance to the driver side door, at this point the car started to drag me while I had the door open and I was holding it by the door handle. I then noticed the door was about to strike a mail box and so I let go and dropped to the ground. After the Jeep struck the mailbox with the open driver side door, it proceeded to drive in reverse when it suddenly made a 90 degree turn and proceeded to cross the street and head up an inclined neighbor's driveway. As it neared their house, I once again attempted to gain entry to the vehicle. Suddenly, the car began to move forward and knocked me out onto the ground where it proceeded to run over both legs with the rear driver side tire and proceeded down the hill back across the street and into a neighbor's fence. My 13 year daughter watched the whole thing in horror.

There were no prior symptoms. However, since it has been at the body shop for repairs to the door and bumper, at least three people in the shop saw my vehicle attempt to power itself on on two occasions and were so upset by this that they disconnected the battery in fear that someone would be injured by my vehicle.

On 10/13/14, my wife left the Grand Cherokee running with the driver door open. The vehicle was in park. I reached into the drivers side to shut the engine OFF. The engine did not shut off when I pushed the off button. The vehicle suddenly went into reverse and the car door knocked me to the ground where my right leg went under the car. The driver side tire ran over my leg and stopped on top of my right upper thigh.

I was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries to my right leg. I was in the hospital for over two weeks requiring 2 operations and reconstruction of skin tissues by a plastic surgeon. To this day I cannot walk more then 20 feet needing to stop due to pain and discomfort.

My neighbor told me that he. Had a tough time trying to get the shift gear from park to reverse to get the car off my leg. Also, we too experienced vibration in the trans. At lower gear when we stop to slow down. This car has not been to the dealer since the accident on the advise of my attorney to see what advised.

Today, I drove my 2014 Grand Cherokee to a gas station. I parked at the curb and put the vehicle in park. The electronic transmission is tricky so you have to make sure you are in park. The P was lit so I knew I was in park. I left the motor running as the AC was on and I wanted the car to cool while I went in to get some pops for my wife and I. We were going to meet for lunch.

I then opened the door, got out of the vehicle, closed the door and then pressed the lock button on the outside of the door handle. I had the key fob in my pocket. When I pressed the button the horn sounded, indicating the door was locked. I walked to the front of the vehicle, then up on the sidewalk and around the front of the Jeep. I then walked about 20 feet to the door of the gas station and went in, bought the drinks and some chips. I was in the store for about 10 minutes. I came out of the gas station and took about 10 steps toward the spot my car was. It was gone!!!! I mean it was nowhere to be found.

I ran around the corner of the building, about 15 feet from where the car was parked, only to find my Jeep backed into the side of the hotel that is attached to the gas station. The vehicle was still running, door was still locked and the transmission was still in park!!!! Thank God no one was injured. My vehicle's front end hit the rear bumper of a vehicle then continued on to the hotel wall. The inside of the hotel had a huge mirror and cabinets that were smashed. Again, by the Grace of God, no one was injured.

This transmission issue MUST be addressed by Chrysler before someone is killed. Had my tires not been turned when I parked, it would have backed right into the gas pumps. I see that others have had this exact issue and we must combine our voices and get these issues fixed. I will follow up once I hear what the Chrysler investigator comes up with, but after reading your comments, I am less that optimistic.

On Sunday July 6,2014, after my family and I went to the Fairway Market on route 46, we went to the CitiBank in a strip mall to do some banking. My husband was driving the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, my son was in the front passenger seat, and I was seated in the rear seat. When we parked in the bank parking lot, my husband put the Jeep’s shifter in the park position and I asked him to keep the car running because of the heat as I was staying in the car and he did. Because he experienced on multiple occasions that this vehicle did not reliably select the desirable shifting position, he made sure that the shifter selected the parking position in this instance. Him and my son exited the Jeep to go to the bank and I stayed in the rear seat of the car and was checking my emails, looking at Facebook, and texting.

I had been sitting for at least three minutes before I felt the car in motion, as I looked up it took me a second to realize it was my car moving in reverse and not a car beside me. I tried to jump forward between the seat to try and stop the vehicle as it was gaining speed going in reverse. As the car continued to move and go faster, it locked itself automatically. My first instinct was to stop it as to not hit anyone or hurt anyone. When I jumped between the seats I tried to stop the car with my left hand on the brake and my right hand on the dash ignition button to get it to stop. As I jumped through the seat I hit my left side hurting myself. The car never stopped after continuously trying with every effort to stop. It finally came to a stop when it hit the rear of another vehicle parked in the parking lot. No airbags deployed and the car’s speed was in a range of at least 20 miles per hour because of the automatic locks system function.

I went to the ER after this incident because of continuous pain in my left side and had x-rays. The doctor informed me that I had broken a couple of ribs. We have a police accident report. We took it to the dealer the very next morning, and the dealer checked it out and informed us at the end of the day that it could not be replicated therefore there is no indication of any malfunction and that we should return the rental car and pick up our vehicle.

After this, we contacted Chrysler/Jeep LLC and opened a claim. They launched an investigation and after three weeks we were informed that it could not be replicated therefore there is no indication of any malfunction.

On another occasion, approximately the first week of March 2014 on a Sunday, my husband took the Jeep and drove a couple of miles and he noticed the Jeep would not select the parking position or the reverse position when he was trying to stop to pick up a passenger. No matter which gear the Jeep was placed in, it would only continue to go forward. My husband tried multiple times to put the Jeep in park and the shifter would not indicate what gear it was in, and would only go forward. He made it back home the couple of miles and was trying to stop the Jeep using the brake and the shifter parking position but the Jeep would not select the parking gear once again, meaning he could not put it in park, or go in reverse, or stop the engine by pushing the brake and ignition button. The Jeep would only go forward.

Since it was a Sunday, and the dealer was closed, and we needed to park the Jeep. We ended up having to disconnect the battery to stop the Jeep until the time we could take it to the dealer the next morning. Again the dealer checked the car and informed us that it could not be replicated; therefore there is no indication of any malfunction.

WOW! This just happened to me this past Friday, October 24, 2014. I also have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, we have had it for a year and 2 months. Here is my similar experience:

On Friday, October 24, 2014, I was dropping off lunch for my sweetheart. I parked the Jeep under a carport that runs the length of the building (roughly 100 Ft long) which is a leveled concrete drive way. I left the Jeep running, because I was just running in and out. I parked, got out of the Jeep, got his lunch out of the back seat, hit the lock button on the driver's door handle, with my fob in my pocket I headed into the office. Once in the building, it is a straight shot from the front door to his desk, he can see everyone that enters the building from his desk as well as anyone parked in front of the front door. The front door is a full glass door.

Halfway between the front door and his desk, he said to me, " Your Jeep is moving!" I turned and ran outside. The Jeep was going backwards at a pretty good clip,…I tried to catch it but it hit the office gal's car that was parked in the back of the building, 20 yards or so past the end of the carport, and came to a stop. Now, please keep in mind the Jeep traveled in a straight path for about 125 yards. In the process I took a nasty fall trying to catch up with the Jeep. Once I got up and made my way to the Jeep, I tried to get inside, the Jeep was running and the door was locked, that's when I realized the fob was no longer in my pocket. It had fallen out my pock when I fell on the pavement. I was so upset with all the damage to the office gal's car as well as to ours, not to mention the injuries I had just sustained.

Her car was so damaged that they had to bend the passenger side finder out in order to drive it. Her front fender, hood, bummer, headlight and side mirror, all need to be replaced. On our Jeep, the rear bummer and rear quarter panel are damaged. The insurance adjuster is scheduled for Monday, October 27, 2014, for a complete assessment. After the adjuster comes, I will take the car to Monken's, the local Jeep dealer for an overall inspection. I honestly believe that this all happened due to a malfunction.

As mentioned in the case from AZ, if the Jeep was in reverse, the moment one released the brake the Jeep would be in monition. I left the Jeep running, put the Jeep in Park and it didn't move while I was getting out of the driver's seat or into the backseat. I locked it and walked away as it was parked on a leveled surface. We called our local dealer and they stated that they never had any other reports related to this issue. It is the weekend but we are going to call Jeep first thing Monday morning, October 27 to make a formal report to Jeep.

What I do not understand is how the Jeep was moving without the fob in the vehicle. How did it move being parked on a level pavement, and why was it going so fast? If anyone else has ever had a similar instance I want to encourage you to report it. Sometimes the smallest voice makes the biggest changes.

Grand Cherokee Overland V6

I have had my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland for 4.5 months. Last weekend on Sunday 10/12, I drove my vehicle up to my mailbox in my neighborhood, put the car in park, and walked 50 feet to my mailbox to get my mail. After getting my mail, I turned around to see my vehicle starting to drive in reverse heading quickly towards my neighbor's closed garage. I ran after the vehicle as it drove through my neighbor's landscaping, flung my foot into the car to hit the brake, got thrown out of the car on to the ground, and the vehicle hit my neighbor's garage door causing damage to both their home and my vehicle. Luckily no one was injured and I was just bruised; their garage door is getting replaced this week. The vehicle was in park on completely level ground and had to have somehow shifted into reverse. Had the car been in reverse when I exited, it would have immediately lurched backwards (it didn't) and had it actually been, it would have already collided with the garage door by the time I got to the mailbox vs. the delayed response it actually had in moving. The backup camera video would have also been displayed on the monitor and I would have gotten a chime the vehicle was in gear when I opened the door. This did not occur.

I took my vehicle to my Jeep dealership in Scottsdale on 10/13 to have it looked at. They told me they could not recreate the issue, but did have to download a software update to my transmission that controlled down shifting when the vehicle is coming to a stop. This seems incredibly ironic that a software update was required at the same time this occurred but the dealership denies any potential connection with the problem. I have read about tons of shifting issues with this new transmission. Has anyone encountered similar issues? I will no longer leave my vehicle running while in park based on this freak event.
