We were on a family trip when a warning indicator for power steering system came on just before I was about to get on the highway to drive 8+ hours to get home. I pulled over at an auto supply store. We checked the power steering fluid and it was completely empty (it had been full 2 weeks prior as we had the oil changed and fluids checked). The power steering went out making it very hard to steer the car at low speeds. We added power steering fluid but it did nothing despite trying to get it to bleed in (the auto parts people said there could be an air bubble not allowing the steering fluid to go down).
We've had the car for 4 years and it is fairly new (although we've driven it a ton with regular maintenance) so we did not expect a major safety fail like this that is going to cost us $3000 to fix! We took it into our local dealership and they will be replacing the power steering gear box (which was leaking), the module assembly (which had failed), and the power steering pump (which was working but is not sold separately from the module assembly).
We ended up having to drive it home because the local repair people in Kentucky could not fix it and no rental cars were available in the state. It looks like a lot of other Jeep Grand Cherokee owners have had similar issues so I hope this is something that will be investigated on a larger scale.
