My Jeep was started to make a whining noise after leaving a parking lot, later on there was a burning smell coming from engine, toward coming home automatic wipers came on even while it was not raining. Next day Jeep would not start nor where there any lights on dash/overhead. Looked up NHTSA and realized others had similar situation with alternator recall, only to find out my Jeep was not covered even when other same/make/model/year were covered. I called Jeep and they said I had different alternator, but I had same problem/issue, not far to be not covered. Total bill $2K for alternator/battery/starter/towing and computer fix. Not to mention I didn't have use of Jeep for days while it was getting fixed. I was lucky I didn't have accident, which could have happened not knowing what was going on at time and could you imagine Jeep dying on highway. Jeep has no clue what is causing this to happen, nor being fair to all consumers, leaving them stranded and broke.
Alternator failed at 35118 mi. Had in repair twice for issues when driving. Loud whine, burning smell and smoke reported. First time dealer keep car for overnight and said they could find no issue even though they had smelled the burning smell too. Second time they told me it was my alternator. They replaced the alternator, I picked up the car, drove 2 miles and the battery light came on. I returned immediately and they kept the car for 3 more days. The failed alternator had "arced" to the power train, and then that had to be replace too (that under warranty thank goodness). But alternator was replaced for $1000 out of my pocket even though very low mileage because was over 3 yr warranty period. In researching how could this have happened so early, I found that the 160 alternators from the same period had been recalled, but the 180's are not (at least not yet....I am hoping to help initiate another recall since I see online that others who have this model and year and 180 alternator have had same issues as me). I was encouraged by fca customer care to file a petition for reimbursement, and have just heard from them that they have declined it since my VIN isn't included in the recall. To be specific about the episodes, I was driving both times that this occurred. Both times I had just started to drive and the car made a loud whining noise that lasted for a bit, and increased on acceleration, and quickly I could smell something like burning rubber and see smoke. I was afraid the car was going to stop suddenly because it started to be jerky, and when I came to stop light it seemed like it was going to stall. But it kept going, and I drove straight to the dealer both times.
I have a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with only 54,248 and the alternator all of sudden started smoking, however, this Jeep is not on any previous recall. I was heading home from work. Burnt smell, siren noise, and the battery light came on. I made it home and called the Jeep dealership. My husband said its a bad alternator.
Used factory auto start and the alternator shorted causing the engine computer to burn out and possible the fuse box as well. Car would not start and must be towed to mechanic. Luckily we weren't in the car when it started smoking up.
As I was driving the car shut off and power steering went out. I barely made it safely to my destination. We called our Jeep dealer and there were a few recalls. We were able to get the Jeep to the dealer. They told me it was the alternator and battery. There is currently a recall on the alternator for the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee (P60/NHTSA 14V-634); however, they claim that my 180 amp is not covered. What I experienced is exactly like the description of this recall. Luckily I was driving when this occurred, because I don't think my wife would have been able to control the vehicle to a safe stop. They are not honoring the recall to replace my parts. More importantly, they are not including my vehicle in the recall because its 180 amps; however, this is a tremendous risk to any owners of this vehicle and I was not notified. I discussed this at length with Fiat Chrysler automobiles (fca) on 03/02/2017. I spoke to customer representative ramario and nicole.

There is a current Chrysler recall out right now (below). P60 - safety recall - alternator / 2011-2014 (LX) Chrysler 300, (ld) Dodge charger, (lc) Dodge challenger, (wd) Dodge durango and 2012- 2014 (wk) Jeep Grand Cherokee my alternator burned up and the whole Jeep was dead randomly one morning emitting smoke under the hood and throughout the cabin. I turned it on and heard a whining noise which then stopped and then smoke just coming out of the alternator. I read the recall and it only applies to the 160 amp alternators. According to my VIN, I have the 180 amp alternator and I feel this recall applies to the 180 amp alternators as well but it isn't listed. I had to get it replaced and ended up spending over $900 on something I think should have been part of this particular recall given the specifics of this recall and the matching symptoms of my burnt up alternator. Thank for any information you can provide.
Low battery light came on while driving 35 mph, and two miles later the majority of dashboard lights came on. Simultaneously, a constant beeping began and wipers turned on. The scary part is that within seconds, I lost power steering and brakes did not work correctly. The road I was driving was precarious, windy, and did not have a shoulder. I continued at minimal speed around the curves for less than a mile, looking for a safe place to pull over. Very soon, the car accelerator stopped and the car died. I managed to pull the car onto the side of the road (took effort without power steering). Terrible and sudden experience. Not enough warning to get the car serviced before complete electronic and vehicle shutdown occurred. Thankful that no other vehicles were around during the incident, as I am confident I did not have safe control of the vehicle during this time. Towed vehicle to safety. Mechanic tested and discovered that alternator fully shorted and battery was completely dead (unable to recharge).

The contact owns a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle stalled, all the warning lights illuminated, and the seat belt malfunctioned. The vehicle veered off the roadway and struck the guardrail. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. The tcs and check engine light came on dashboard along with the wiper blades begin moving even though the wiper blade control switch was in the off position. Every button, horn, and the wiper blade/ turn signal control arm on the steering column will not work. Fuses appears to not be blown. Nothing with turn off the front wiper blades. All other electrical buttons and the dashboard cluster works with no mal function. The hazards work fine as button is below radio and not on steering column. This brings safety question of no turn signals at night and possibly airbag might not deploy if rest of the electrical switches and buttons are not functioning on the steering column only. This happened initially in motion on a city street after getting off a highway and turning into a parking garage. Millage is between 116000 and 117000 miles.
