CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2012 Grand Cherokee hasn't seen the same complaint volume as the 2011, at least not yet.

It's worth noting both model years are part of a class-action lawsuit that focuses on a defective TIPM and a long wait for replacement parts.

The 2012 also received national attention after it failed a Swedish Magazine's "moose test". The test measures a vehicle's ability to swerve out of the way of an obstacle you wouldn't want to hit while driving down the road ... like a moose.

I purchased my 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited February 14th 2015, used from a Car Dealership. I received a notice in the mail a month or so later telling me about the recalls on my Jeep. The "TIPM" was one of them. I did have the Jeep just stop running twice right after I bought it, and I was pretty perplexed and pissed at the same time! So I was glad to get the recall notice and brought the Jeep in for repair. Well, it went quite awhile with no issues, until about a month ago. Now the Jeep has stopped running several times again now! Usually when decelerating up an off ramp, or turning down the on ramp. But has shut off just driving straight on a flat road too. Suppose I've got to bring it back in!!

Grand Cherokee Laredo 5.7L V8

The car started having issues with the door locking system. Dealer said it was a broken wire. Charged $110 for the diagnosis. Brought the car in for the repair and after half a day I got a phone call saying the wires are in good shape, but the problem now was the TIPM that needed to be changed all together. Part was not in stock and had to be ordered. Now I won't be able to drive my car for another day. Estimated cost to get the part and replace it (10 minute procedure) $1,350. Are you crazy? Dealer says I am not covered by warranty. Still he proceeds telling me it is a common issue that happens all the time. Are you kidding me??? If it happens all the time why is it not covered by a recall???

Come on!

I bought a 2012 grand cherokee used three weeks ago to the day when while driving the kids to the library Saturday, suddenly all the warning lights (check engine, abs, traction control, brake, service power steering system etc.) buzzers, speedometer and transmission position started acting erratically. I pulled over and turned the car off. After a few minutes I restarted it and made it to my driveway when it did it again. i got it into my garage, disconnected the battery cable and let it sit until this morning. when I re-connected the cable and started the car only the check engine light came on. So the wife followed me to the dealer where we dropped it off. luckily it made the 8 mile trip without any other issues. then a few hours later the service dept. called me to say it was the TIPM, appx. $950.00, not under warranty, and about 3 to 5 days to fix.

In the last 2 days, my 2012 Grand Cherokee has shut off while driving twice. On 10/29/2015 exiting the highway with my 2 year old daughter. The second time was the following day 10/30/2015 with my wife driving by herself.

I have had the vehicle for about 30 days. I purchased it from the dealership.

The vehicle shut off. There were no warning lights. The radio and lights all still worked. I had to coast to the side with no brakes, no power steering. Once stopped I could put it in park and start it again without issue.

We took the Grand Cherokee to the dealer in August 2015 due to the R09 recall for the faulty fuel pump relay. Two months later, the car won't start. Our (non-Chrysler) mechanic identifies the problem is low fuel pressure, and suggests we take the car to the dealer since the repair should be covered under the recall. However after three days (!) of diagnosis, they say the problem is with the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) but NOT with the fuel pump relay WHICH IS PART OF THE TIPM!! They say they have to replace the TIPM, costing $1300! I tried calling the Chrysler customer service number, but after a long, heated, discussion, got nowhere.

We need the car back, so I authorized the repair, but I am furious with Jeep.

PLEASE NEVER BUY A CHRYSLER/DODGE/JEEP VEHICLE!! I know I never will again.

I'm furious that the TIPM is a known failure component for my 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee and nothing has been done about it. Chrysler fixed the issue with a recall/extended warranty for the TIPM for other year models, but not for the 2012 in spite of having over 80k failures of this exact same part across multiple vehicle makes/models. The dealership charged me $129.00 to diagnose this problem when they admitted (only after I'd had time to look up wtf a TIPM was online) that they knew it was the TIPM from the start because hundreds of vehicles are coming back with the same problem.

This issue PREVENTS THE AUTOMOBILE FROM STARTING. It has stranded me on occasion. It was ridiculously expensive to fix and I think Chrysler should reimburse me for this. I'm going to call Chrysler's Office of the CEO and if I don't get resolution I will join the class-action lawsuit I read about online.

I think it's a shame that Chrysler cannot or will not order recalled parts the day they mail customers recall notices. This is the 4 recall on my spouse 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. I purchased this Jeep in November 2011. All the information I have gathered so far on the most recent recall on the (TIPM) is if this part fails it will cause a crash.

All I can say to Chrysler if this happens get your Lawyers ready cause I am going to file a lawsuit. I am sick and tired of unsafe junk being put out by automakers across this Nation. Chrysler will be held accountable for defective junk it allows it to be placed in our vehicles, when they (DAMN WELL KNOW IT'S DEFECTED.) I fell like Chrysler should be forced by NTSB and National Traffic and Motor Safety Act to buy back my 2012 Jeep for what I had to pay for it.

The only thing Chrysler understands is MONEY. Our Government needs to reach deep into their pockets and make them pay out of their nose for unsafe defective vehicles they continue to put out!!!

Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7L Hemi

Was having multiple instances of the vehicle not starting or the engine cutting out while driving so I replaced the TIPM with a new TIPM which showed a manufacture date of 12-19-2014. The part was replaced in early February and for the first couple of weeks I had no issues. In late March, the vehicle shut off as I was approaching an intersection. I thought, maybe it was a mistake on my part. Today the vehicle shut off again as I was getting ready to make a turn at an intersection. Could have been a very dangerous situation had pedestrians been in the crosswalk. Loss of power to brakes and steering.

I have been very happy with my 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This until the started started malfunctioning. Obviously a defect in the system. This finally resulted in my Jeep not starting at all and leaving me and my family stranded. On a Sunday afternoon, no less. Towing was $95.

This starter defect SHOULD be covered in a recall as I understand it was the same problem in the 2011 Jeep models but has not yet been recalled in the 2012 Jeep to date.

Please advise.

Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7L V8

I recently purchased a used 12 Grand Cherokee from Starling Chevrolet Buick in St. Cloud, Fl. I did a ton of research and had been looking for this particular Jeep for many months. Our Jeep is in immaculate condition and the car fax listed only two minor recalls, the Sun Visor wiring and a brake component; nothing else. I drove it off the lot a 35 days ago and back home to Pensacola, Fl where I live; no problems whatsoever.

About 14 days ago my Jeep randomly stalled while I was taking a left turn in front of another vehicle (at a safe distance). Thankfully I was able to pull to the side of the road (no power steering) and come to a complete stop, put the Jeep in park, and start it up again. I was completely baffled why it did this and took it in for service under my 3 year extended warranty. My dealer, Chrysler Dodge in Pensacola was unable to get any error or warning sign on the Diagnostic test and could not find any problem whatsoever. My Jeep has stalled 2 other times while driving and each time I took it back and the same thing, it would not stall on the mechanic and no check engine light.

I was lucky to talk to the previous owner tonight and he explained that he had the TIPM replaced 2 TIMES, yes 2 TIMES in this jeep and after the 2nd time the Jeep kept stalling on him. The first time was at 36K and second around 45K, I am currently at 58K. He said it was extremely unsafe to drive, especially with 2 young children. My wife and I are terrified that we purchased a “lemon” without having any knowledge about this at all. The car fax did not show this information, my Jeep dealer showed me all the warranty history through Chrysler and they sincerely want to help us. However, if the faulty TIPM will not even show a check engine light, then how do they warranty a part? They cant (or refuse) and that is the lawsuit. The previous owner said he had to fight until he couldn’t fight anymore to get his dealer to replace the TIPM and it still failed after the fact and is now failing on me.

What can I do?

Thank you,

Ashton Howard

I had the TIPM replaced on my 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland about 6 months ago. The replacement cost me over $1200 as my Jeep was just out of warranty. The past few weeks I have been experiencing the same symptoms. I occasionally when starting the vehicle it will not turn over. Took it to the dealership and they can not make it happen therefore cannot fix it. It is a complete inconvenience and now I have to wait for it to be more frequent before I can get it fixed again. I do not understand why there has not been a recall on this part.

I have had multiple recalls on my vehicle. I contacted Chrysler and they advised me that the TIPM repair would not be covered on my vehicle because it is a 2012 and it has been only issued for a 2011. This is an $1200 repair which is ridicules. I had the whole engine replaced early this year due to a manufacturing defect.
