CarComplaints.com Notes: The fourth generation Grand Cherokee took the relatively trouble-free run of the 3rd-generation and flipped the script.

From 2010 to 2011, complaints about the vehicle not starting increased 10-fold. In fact, the 2011 model year is riddled with engine problems and a defective TIPM might be to blame. The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) distributes power to all the eletrical components in the vehicle, so when it starts acting funny so do numerous other components in the car. Orders for new TIPMs were so abundant that parts became scarce, prompting a class-action lawsuit claiming Chrysler ignored this obvious defect.

By 2012 complaints dropped back down by about 80%. Needless to say, if you see a used 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee on a lot just keep walking.

Grand Cherokee Limited 5.7L V8

Problem started by engine suddenly cranking but not turning over one evening. Started up fine the next morning, then wouldn't start again later that day. Started fine when tow truck arrived. Then wouldn't start again. Towed to dealer. Replaced fuel pump. Started fine the next day, but when parked at destination, engine wouldn't shut off when in off position-engine started smoking and caught on fire and then stalled. Towed to repair shop where they cooled engine, replaced coolant and couldn't figure out what the problem was. Drove home 2+ hours, ran fine. Wouldn't start the next day, took to dealer, did fuel pump relay bypass. Drove it home after repair. Next day, wouldn't start-battery completely dead. Wouldn't jump. Replaced battery-engine started but wouldn't turn off again in off position, started smoking-pulled fuse to get it to turn off. Back at dealership-quoted $9,000 (!!!!!!!!!!!) to get it running again. Still owe ~20k on our auto loan....feeling totally helpless and screwed over. Someone please HELP!!!!

I had the TIPM fuel relay bypass "fix" done last fall at a local Jeep Dealer. It was fine for a while, then it started acting exactly the same the past few weeks. Always seems to start first time of the day (cold start), but then fails to start after a short trip (5-10 miles). I've taken it into the dealer twice in the past weeks and they are unable to get any error codes, it's an intermittent problem that does not store a code anywhere. Since they can't get a failed start at the dealer, they won't repair anything. It's also not covered by my extended warranty (unless a problem is diagnosed) which means I pay diagnostic charges $150.00.

I guess I need to wait for a complete fail and pay for a tow as well... SH*TTY!

For a few weeks now, when I start my engine the engine cranks but car does not start. Sounds like the motor wants to engage but doesn't quite get there. (Sorry if car vocabulary is off...) Anyway, I have to retry several times and then it finally works. This occurs randomly - morning, afternoon, evening - doesn't matter weather conditions or other. There are days that I don't experience the problem at all. I called my dealership the other day to inquire about back order on Recall for something else (!!!) and mentioned this problem - mechanic had no suggestions for me.

Today - there was absolutely no way to get the car started! I tried 10 times and gave up afraid I could damage something in the engine (not sure if that could actually happen...).

I have a very comprehensive Powertrain - but not sure if this too will be covered. I am car-less right now... and extremely pissed off.

Vehicle would not start, just sits and cranks and cranks. It takes about 15 minutes to get it started. I called Chrysler, they said it was part of the faulty TIPM and made an appointment. II took it too the dealer, sat there for 3 hours only for them too tell me that there wasn't anything they could do for the vehicle at this time.

Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6L

  • Automatic transmission

Vehicle start is intermittent. While at dealer having a recall attended to, found out the TIPM has an open recall with no parts or solution to date available from Chrysler/Jeep. Contacted Chrysler Corporation and spoke with Recall Assistance Center. Was informed that parts are not available and that I could PAY to have the problem resolved and after receiving a second recall notice I could submit a complaint and have my expenditures reimbursed...so Chrysler wants me to pay to fix their recall and it's ok to have an "interim" solution fix the issue, but they can't seem to resolve the issue when they have to pay for it...

Grand Cherokee Limited 5.7L

Come out after work and vehicle won't start. Had to turn off and on 3, sometimes 4 times, to start. Found some info from a friend at a Jeep dealership who told me about a kit that they use to remove the fuel pump relay from the TIPM and mount it on the outside. That worked.
