CarComplaints.com Notes: The fourth generation Grand Cherokee took the relatively trouble-free run of the 3rd-generation and flipped the script.

From 2010 to 2011, complaints about the vehicle not starting increased 10-fold. In fact, the 2011 model year is riddled with engine problems and a defective TIPM might be to blame. The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) distributes power to all the eletrical components in the vehicle, so when it starts acting funny so do numerous other components in the car. Orders for new TIPMs were so abundant that parts became scarce, prompting a class-action lawsuit claiming Chrysler ignored this obvious defect.

By 2012 complaints dropped back down by about 80%. Needless to say, if you see a used 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee on a lot just keep walking.

When started and shifted into "D" drive mode, car would self engage in manual gear "4" and then had no traction or acceleration, only reverse. Transmission completely died and would automatically go into manual "4" gear itself when put into "D" drive mode from park or while driving on the road. Very dangerous and very scary. Had it towed to dealer who wanted $1,300 to repair faulty tipm module and would not cover under powertrain warranty. Called Chrysler and negotiated it down to $100. This should be a recall and is very dangerous because the car is putting itself into the wrong gear while moving and would not accelerate or move in drive mode.

Our 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee would not start. Plenty of crank but no start. Had vehicle towed to nearest dealer but there were no diagnostic codes set in the computer and the techs could not find any problems. The vehicle started every time for three days. This problem has plagued us on two more occassions during the fall of 2013 (again, no issues found) and has raised its ugly head in may of 2014. My complaint; Jeep dealerships cannot find the problem, however, a simple search of the web produces volumes of "no start" testimonials from other victims as well. My wife has had 3 separate encounters where her 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland has randomly powered down, losing capability to operate the vehicle (no brakes/steering) while she was driving the vehicle. The first occasion happened in November of 2013, vehicle was stopped at an intersection and lost power. The vehicle was put into park and re-started with no further issue. We didn't report this incident. The second event happened on April 3, 2014, the vehicle lost power while my wife was driving at approx. 40 mph. Again, when the vehicle came to a stop she put it into park and re-started the vehicle. We contacted the local Chrysler dealership on April 7 and set up an appointment for April 12. The third event occurred this morning, April 10, 2014. The vehicle speed is difficult to determine but my wife was slowing down to make a left turn on a 50mph road. There were other vehicles in the area that could have caused serious accident, mainly a school bus with children on board. Again, the vehicle had to be put into park and restarted. Difficult to do on this busy road. I contacted the same dealership and explained to them what had happened. The dealership moved up my April 12 appointment to today. So far, the dealership has been accommodating. They plan to run diagnostics checks to determine cause of power failure. Also, there are other electrical issues plaguing this vehicle (power door locks not working, drivers side seat heater not working, key not being detected). This vehicle has approx. 129,000 kms on the odometer and we bought it privately about 6 months ago (approx. 105,000 kms). I felt that I should report this issue given the recent attention to similar issues with General Motors (ignition switch). If necessary, I can provide more details.

Bought a used Jeep Grand Cherokee 2011 w/ 19K miles on it (it was leased before). First incident happened with 30K miles on it. Vehicle would turn over a little bit but would not start. Dealership said fuel pump was bad, running after vehicle turned of then didn't get power when turning it on. Dealership replaced fuel pump, went to pick it up from dealership and it wouldn't start. Second trip (within 2-3 days) to dealership it started up. Worked fine for about 4-5 weeks, then same incident occurred again. Vehicle would turn over but not start up, sounded the exact same as the prior issue. Dealership replaced the tipm, car worked fine for about 12 months. Two weeks ago, the same issue came about. Car turning over but not starting. This time the dealership replaced my key fob and it worked for 1 day, then the same issue occurred. Now my Jeep is sitting at another dealership and they have replaced the wiring to the fuel pump and now they are in the process of replacing another fuel pump. I heard today that they fuel pump is replaced but still not getting power to it (tipm problem again). Chrysler wants me to pay a deductible for an obviously faulty part that they have replaced again. This last time when I brought my Jeep to the dealer I tried to start the vehicle to let me father hear the noise it was making. A dealership service technician walked by hearing the noise it made and asked, "is it a 2011?", I replied, "yes", he followed up by saying that model and year has had a recurring problem with the tipm, which from what I have read online is extremely dangerous, especially if the car were moving and it went out. You would be left without power steering and brakes. Chrysler has made a product that is faulty and realizes it, yet they still charge customers to replace the faulty parts.

The first 3 weeks I had the vehicle the engine light kept coming on. I returned to the lithia dealership in Santa Fe 3 times to have it corrected. They accused me of fueling the car with the engine running. I do not fuel my cars with the engine running. The transmission had to be replaced at 4,000K miles because the robot at the factory did not seat the transmission fluid filter properly and metal flakes were found in the transmission oil pan as a result which damaged the valve box. The vehicle still acts odd at times ' jerking slightly when changing gears. At 45 mph while I was accelerating to merge onto the highway, the vehicle would change gears by itself into first gear. A young tech had been reading a service update bulletin and knew about this issue. It required a patch'for the computer and a download to fix this issue. I thought it was a miracle that I was not in an accident during this time. I have had so many issues with the Jeep not recognizing the key fob upon entry and or trying to start the vehicle. Forget the emergency key that is inside the key fob it was never properly keyed so you could use it in an emergency. At 15,000K miles the front sway bar had to be replaced. This vehicle has not been off-road and for the sway bar to break down like that is inexcusable. Sudden unexplained acceleration.

On 10/18/13 I was traveling 40 mph on a main road and an F-250 pulled out into oncoming traffic from being stopped on a side road and we collided. Both our vehicles had to be towed away. I hit his driver side area and my whole front end was smashed, bumper torn off, fluid leaking from the car. It was not drivable. I had my baby in the car seat in the back but he was fine. I was fine too aside from being sore for 3 weeks and getting whiplash but the main issue that concerns me is that my driver side airbag never went off. It seems to me it should have gone off and I'm wondering if something is faulty. We contacted Chrysler and they were supposed to look at it while it was in the shop, didn't do that, now they want us to bring to dealership to have code read and in the meantime I'm still driving around in a potentially unsafe vehicle. And someone else out there with the same type of vehicle might be as well.......
