I initially purchased this Jeep at 45,000 miles. It now has 98,000 miles. This issue has now happened at least 5 times in this time span. The first few times I thought it may be just a coincidence but now it is starting to scare me that there could be an issue. Because it can not be replicated at the mechanic, S no one can pinpoint what the problem could be. The Jeep will just die spontaneously. There is no warning that it is coming. Luckily I have always been going slow through a parking lot with no other cars in my way. I am able to control the car to a stop and then restart it. This past week I became more nervous however as it happened while I was making a left turn from a major street on to a residential street. I was able to control the car to the side of the residential road while turning however, if there had been cars on the street I was making the left too or I had not given more time for the cars coming at me during the turn this could have equaled a major accident. I am seeing through my research that I am not the only one experiencing this.

I was driving on a busy road at night approaching a 4 way traffic light intersection. I was going approximately 35-40 mph and the road conditions were dry. Suddenly the electric, lights, gauges, steering and braking system in my Jeep began flickering and spasming like my Jeep entire electric system was having seizures and was switching power on and off. To the cars ahead of me it looked like I was flashing my lights and the cars behind me as if I was turning my lights on and off rapidly. I pulled off the road into a parking lot and my Jeep continued to spasm and flicker on and off. I turned my vehicle off and let it sit in hopes that this issue was a one time electrical glitch and also because I couldn't safely drive it in this condition. I eventually started my vehicle again and began to drive thinking it was alright. Within minutes it began doing the same thing again. My vehicle has continued to randomly exhibit this behavior along with additionally all the gauge lights and sounds blinking and chiming for several minutes at a time. I never know when it is going to happen but when it does it is extremely dangerous and scary to be in the vehicle. I only have my ignition key on the key ring but that doesn't seem to make any difference. I have noticed that my ignition switch is extremely sensitive even when initially starting the vehicle.

The dash lights started flickering, then the brakes locked up and the Jeep just lost power and turned off. This was the first time that the Jeep's brakes locked up and lost power and this is enough to cause alarm and resulted with this complaint. I will not wait for a second time that the vehicle's brakes lock up and turns itself off at a more dangerous highway situation on a busy traffic and certainly not putting my family at this type of risk which is obviously a manufacturer's defect. [xxx], a customer service representative from Jeep that I have spoken to advised that Chrysler could possibly issue a recall if enough number of complaints were received from NHTSA. Am I really supposed to wait until my family gets injured before something gets done with this known issue? the dash lights/gauges issue has been ongoing and Jeep had been contacted a few years back to no avail. I also advised [xxx] (Jeep rep) about all four handles breaking at the same time. I had to open the door from the outside to let my daughter and her friend get out of the backseat. These handles should not break at all due to it's normal use and purpose. I request your department to please investigate this obvious safety issue, and avoid any injuries that this defect could cause. Thank you. I was driving East on the Pennsylvania turnpike from pittsburgh, pa to york, pa with my wife and 1 year old daughter on the Friday of memorial day weekend. I was driving between 70-75 mph in the left hand lane when I noticed I had lost acceleration, power steering, and all of my interior lights had turned off. The entire vehicle had shut off. This easily could have caused a horrific accident as there was a ton of traffic behind me and on the road. Fortunately, I was going down a hill and I was able to maintain speed for enough time to safely drift my car into the right lane and eventually over to the side of the road. Once pulled over, I had difficulty shifting my vehicle into park and turning off the ignition. After a few minutes of attempting to shut it off, I was able to get the key out of the ignition. I waited about 5 or so minutes and was able to start the vehicle without a problem. I stayed in the right hand lane the rest of the trip and eventually made it to my destination safely. When I got home, I took the vehicle to three rivers Chrysler Jeep and Dodge in pittsburgh, pa..I was told I needed to replace the ignition switch and the "wire control module". with all of the recalls in the news regarding Chrysler and GM ignition switches, I would not be surprised if this was a defect in Jeep as well. The experience I had was very frightening and I hope others do not have the same problems.

My pregnant wife has had this issue before with the car and we took it to the dealership without anyone being able to fix it. While driving between 15-60 mph the car completely shuts down. No power steering, brakes, or electrical. You have to throw it in neutral and start it back up. This has to be an electrical issue as other quirky things have been happening as well such as the headlights will flicker on and off and the volume and stations selectors on the steerwheel often do not work properly. This is an issue that Jeep needs to identify and fix. Very scary to be going 50-60 mph and lose control of your car going down the highway. Over the past two days this has happened three times. I have done research online as well and there are plenty of other Jeep owners that have this same issue. Jeep needs to have a recall for this issue. I am shocked that this has not happened yet.

Purchased the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited (4.7L) new from dealership. It stalls unexpectedly. Usually at low speeds. Most of the time while turning. It does it probably once every two or three months, which makes it next to impossible to duplicate at the dealership. In addition, no codes are ever tripped, leaving no proof of an existing problem. We have taken it to the dealership on three separate occasions over the years while it was still under warranty, however, the dealerships maintained that if they could not duplicate the problem, they could not fix the problem, leaving it unresolved. The Jeep now has over 100K on it (out of warranty) and it continues to stall. What I find odd, is that this particular problem was happening to thousands of people with Jeep like mine over the years, but on the three separate occasions we took it into the dealership, they acted like they had never heard of the problem. How is this possible?

While at highway speed, on the highway, vehicle stalled, lost power steering, acceleration ability, braking and lights. Had to coast to the side of the road while narrowly avoiding other motorists at highway speed. This has occurred on several different occasions at speeds anywhere from 5-60 mph. Very dangerous and frightening. This has been reported by thousands of other Jeep owners and is eventually going to get people killed.

While entering on ramp for highway Jeep shuts off... no more control since no power. Hit the guard rail. This stalling happen on many occasions while driving or in park. With passengers in vehicle very scary. Have spent more than $4000 @ dealer @ & manufacturer involved. With no resolution...but the stress & the dissatisfaction in the american product I'd like to buy that can't be fixed. I'm convinced I'll probably never buy american again. Very disappointed on how Jeep corporate handled the issue & left me with vehicle with these problems & told me case closed... trade it in.

I have a 2006 Grand Cherokee with 30,000 miles. While driving on a residential road, the steering gave out and the vehicle crashed into cars on the right - the vehicle was going around 15mps. Upon inspection the actual inner ball joint that threads into the power steering unit broke free causing the front right wheel to cut loose. The threads were stripped off of the ball joint that connects the rod into the power steering unit. My insurance adjusters quote did not include the steering rack/rod as he did not believe it broke due to the impact in the accident. The threads in the power steering unit are fine. Chrysler's investigation determined are not responsible and there was no component failure. The damage on the vehicle was all front end (bumper, grill, etc) and there is no damage on any of the steering components, just the failed threads. If the steering did fail and the vehicle was on the highway this accident could have been very severe. The steering rack has been replaced and the old parts are available for inspection.

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that her vehicle has been serviced four different times because the power steering continues to shutter. On July 20, 2007, the steering gear was replaced. She was informed by another Jeep dealer that the shuttering can cause the air bag to deploy at any time. The contact does not drive the vehicle because the failure has not been corrected. The speed was unknown. The current mileage was 11,785 and failure mileage was 5,558.
