I drove through some heavy rain at approximately 3 P.M. on December 24, 2009. My 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee quit. I had to have it December 28, 2009 I had it towed to an independent shop. Over the christmas week end, two mechanics advised the engine had hydrolocked. The shop owner advised that it had hydrolocked. Then after filing an insurance claim, he advised it was not watert but he did not know what caused it. I went to the dealership and talked to a service adviser and she advised it had hydrolodged, a common occurrence, covered by insurance. Then, after I took it there the insurance adjuster wanted the engine torn down at my expense. It was supposed to take one day and it took four. The mechanic advised it was not water but he did not know what caused it. He advised the service adviser it damaged the starter, the water pump, the first piston, numerous valve springs, and cracked the block. This is an unsafe vehicle. It can not be driven in water. In July and October it stalled in water and started again. This Jeep has a Mercedes engine and transmission and a european battery. It was not disclosed when I bought it. The battery can not be jumped. I had to have it towed the night the battery quit, from a rural area. It is not a mopar product. I have the original battery. The original parts are at the dealership with the Jeep. I complained to the corporate office and they did not care.

  • 27,199 miles
2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4X4 4.7L V8 with 27199 miles. Vehicle stalled while traveling at highway speeds accompanied by a total loss of electrical power including headlights. Steering and brakes were both difficult to use while attempting to slow vehicle and pull onto shoulder. This is a very unsafe condition and there was no warning prior to the event. Towed to dealership and was informed there were no codes in the system and they were unable to find a problem after two days of diagnosis and road testing. I have read numerous reports of similar problems, and the 2006 Jeep commander with the same engine was recalled for the same issue.

2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7L. On various occasions the car has stalled abruptly with the effect of losing all power on steering and breaking. Some situations have been critical and some have not been. The car stalled when shifting from reverse into drive and on other occasions going downhill coming back from big bear (mountainous roads) going downhill using a lower gear to use the break power of the engine. The first time I have experienced this I indicated below with the downhill experience. Others followed.

Jul 222008

Grand Cherokee

  • 11,000 miles
Vehicle stalls when accelerating from a stop. Has occurred about 4 - 5 times in the past year and have taken it to two dealerships, with no resolution because they cannot replicate the incident. When researching online there are forums with others who are complaining of the same problem. When accelerating from a stop it is usually into traffic and presents a major safety issue since there is a complete loss of power (brakes & steering).

The unit will cut off for no reason while sitting stopped. It has happened several times. I took the unit into the C/D/J dealer and was told that they could not find a fault code. Said that I needed to pay for the 30K service. I refused, unless they put in writing that the such said service would stop the engine failure. They refused and I advised that this issue is not the only one that they heard about. Needless to say, they called the police on me! Jeep....the new name needs to be "joke".

While I was sitting at a red light today I was completely stopped with my right foot on the brake. I felt the Jeep Grand Cherokee surge. I looked at the tachometer and the needle shot upwards and I had to really stand on the brake to keep the SUV from moving. I slipped the transmission into neutral to eliminate the surge on the brakes and the engine whinnied and then idled down. I immediately made an appointment at my dealership for Friday April 20, 2007. Third incident. I am well aware of sudden acceleration syndrome where it is believed drivers are stepping on the brake but really applying the gas. I was already sitting still and my foot never moved from any pedal so this theory is eliminated.

2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee 65th anniversary edition: 15 days off the lot when while driving 15-20 mph engine completely died. I could not steer to the side of the road. There were no warning lights or any indication of a problem. Dealership diagnosed "major internal engine failure" and replaced with new engine. About 4 months later rattling sound turned out to be catalytic converter that needs to be replaced. Still waiting for the part. SUV still does not drive 100%. sometimes when I step on the gas the truck does not respond right away.
