This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Whining noise coming from back of 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee; removed drive shaft between transfer case and rear diff-found U joints on each end slightly tight; had new U joints installed (had replaced by a custom shop as Jeep driveshafts and U joints are one component and cost in the $1200 range to replace)-my U joints are now serviceable and can be changed at any shop; problem still existed after repair, removed transfer case-no problems there; opened up rear diff and found pinion bearing pre-tension had been overtightened (my mechanic says this was done at the factory as this case has never been opened up prior to this)-gears were still okay but bearings showed signs of stress so changed out all bearings in diff and re-set pinion tension; problem now solved-my out of pocket cost - $1300. This vehicle has 53000 miles on it.
