The contact owns a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. While driving 40 mph the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealership. Prior to the failure the fan relay had to be replaced several different times. The current and failure mileages were 75000.

My wife was on her way home from work when the vehicle suddenly overheated. The cooling fan blades had disintegrated, blown thought the top and bottom of the fan shroud and into the radiator causing loss of coolant. The fan shroud assembly, the radiator and the engine head gasket all had to be replaced due to overheating of the vehicle.

I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It has 85,000 miles. It began losing coolant. The mechanic determined it was a head gasket. After taking the engine apart, it was discovered that a casting defect in the intake manifold caused the problem. There was a water jacket covered by casting material at manufacture.

On Sunday August 20 I noticed that my vehicle was shaking at certain speeds. On Monday August 21 I took my vehicle to a mechanic who diagnosed that we needed new spark plugs. The spark plugs were replaced. On Tuesday August 22 when I was leaving with my vehicle it was still shaking and the check engine light was on. The mechanic diagnosed the problem as a bad 02 sensor. On Wednesday August 23 he called and told me that the O2 sensor was not the problem and that I needed to take it to the dealership. On Thursday August 24 I took my vehicle into the dealership. They told us that they couldn't figure out what the problem was and that they were going to have to take the engine apart. They called me on Friday August 25 and said that they were going to have to replace the camshaft and lifters because of "carbon build up". when asked what caused the build up the mechanic said that he did not know. When asked if this was a common problem with Jeep the mechanic said yes.

Vehicle low coolant light came on, checked fluid level it was low. Oil pressure dropped drastically. Normally indicates ~40 psi while at operating temperature, it now indicates 10 psi at idle, in drive. At start up, when engine is hot, the oil pressure gauge will not move until the throttle is depressed. My local repair shop owner called a local Jeep shop who informed him that the head was probably cracked, and that leaked coolant internally, causing the cam and or main bearings to wipe out, indicated by the oil pressure readings being low. According to the Jeep service shop, this is a known defect with the 6 cylinder engine. I then took the vehicle to a Chrysler 5 star service center. After explaining everything to the service manager, he said they would check it out but that he had heard of no such problem regarding this motor. The next day, he called to inform me that the motor did have a cracked head and that they would be replacing it under warranty. When I asked him about possible damage to the lower half of the motor he stated that there was no way of knowing that coolant leakage had caused the problem, that Chrysler would not warranty replacement of the engine, and that 3-5lbs of oil pressure is acceptable at idle, 10psi being normal for this motor. I contacted Chrysler corporate via email - response- they were sorry I was dissatisfied and that "intermittent problems are difficult to diagnose..." - follow up phone call yielded the exact same response. I am concerned that once the head assembly is replaced, both the dealer and Chrysler will try to ignore the low oil pressure problem until the vehicle is beyond warranty coverage, absolving them of any responsibility to repair it further. This is also a major safety issue with this vehicle. Should the engine fail, a serious multi vehicle accident may result from motorists passing thru the resulting oil slick, especially in a congested highway situation. It is my opinion that chrylser knows of this defect.

2002 Grand Cherokee transmission slipped into second and third gear. ***** the problem was diagnosed as a transmission governor sensor. One year later, the coolant light illuminated even though the coolant was full, the oil pressure gauge went all the way too high and stayed there, the dealer stated it was a bad sending unit. The engine light illuminated, when the vehicle misfires, a popping sound comes through the radio whenever it is turned on. The transmission has started to slip again.

Dt consumer stated the engine failed on September 16, 2005, the oil pressure dropped to zero while on a hill, all types of noise came out of the engine. Consumer stated they had the vehicle towed to a dealer, and dealer said there was sludge build up inside the motor. Consumer a has used the proper oil as stated in the owners manual. Consumer contacted the manufacturer, they said there was nothing they could do. They claimed it was not from changing the oil at Chrysler. However, consumer stated they had records for the oil changes at their local mechanic.

My wife & I were driving on I-95 South when my Jeep Grand Cherokee's check engine light came on but before we could do anything it shifted from drive to 2nd gear and went from 60mph to around 25mph while we were still in the 3rd inside lane of a 3 lane hwy so we proceded to pull off the hwy and check out the truck and also let it sit for awhile and in doing so the lite went off so we proceded to get back on and go straight home but as we tried to get on the hwy it happened again but this time we went from drive to 1st gear and we almost got rearended by an 18 wheeler but he moved over at the last second, where we got on there was no break down lane so we had to go for about a mile and in the process we started to loose the brakes do to problems ariseing from the ABS and also the engine was acting funny it started to shut off then it would speed up and it did it 3 or 4 times so when we got off we had the Jeep flatbeded to "greenwich Jeep" in greenwich, ct. Soon as it's fixed I'm getting rid of it but I did want to note the problem with you!

A loud high pitched whirring noise is heard, whenever the engine is "under load"(eg. Whenever step on gas, while vehicle traveling at (appx) 60 mph). Jeep insists that there is nothing wrong, but a persistent noise of this type that is unable to be. *dimsii IVOQ entry posted after 12-12-02 cut over to artemis***762797
