This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The driver's door automatically locked, and then could not be unlocked. I drove to my local Chrysler/Jeep dealer, and they said it was not a safety issue, and was not covered because the car is out of warranty. I think it* a safety issue, as I had to climb out through the passeneger side door, because the drivers side door could not be unlocked or opened, even with the manual unlock.
I have had my 2000 Grand Cherokee for a little over one year. In that year I replaced the actuator in the drivers side door. It made a loud screaching noise. Now both of my back doors are making the same screaching noise and I will have to replace them. Overall, I am very happy with the performance of my Jeep and glad that my problems are not under the hood! but...as a brand, Jeep should be embarassed that every time I lock and unlock my doors a loud noise is heard by everyone around. I think that Jeep is a favorable brand in the minds of most, but this noise makes my Jeep sound like a piece of junk!
I am writing to express my frustration and anger regarding my 2000 Grand Cherokee. Since this past October, I have experienced a myriad of problems which include the following: 1. a broken ventilation deflector which prevents any air from coming through the ventilation. I spent nearly $100 to find out that it is a $37 part with $500 in labor just to install it. I have children in the car, and the summer heat of 100+ degrees is in my mind, dangerous. 2. all of the passenger doors cannot be opened either manually or remotely from the outside or inside. I received an estimate to replace the lock actuators at a staggering cost of $500 per lock! the doors canT be opened from the outside or from the inside without systematically unlocking the doors with the remote, then reaching in from the drivers seat to manually unlock them from the inside. It doesnT take a genius to see that this is a huge safety issue if I happen to get in an accident and the passengers (children) are unable to get out of the vehicle. The Jeep mechanic said this is a common occurrence with Jeep for quite a while. 3. the driver side mirror broke when my wife was adjusting the angle of the mirror. There is now no tension to hold the mirror in place. All of these problems began 8 months ago and I am more than a little angry about it, especially when none of these items are covered past the 3 year warranty. All tolled, I am looking at spending somewhere in the range of $3000 to fix these problems. Right now I am extremely unsatisfied customer, and expect some healthy measure of cooperation from Jeep.
Right passenger door began making a loud grinding noise when locked. Occasionally, it will not unlock automatically with the rest of the doors, and I have to reach through the front passenger side and slide the door unlocked. I have children, and this could be very dangerous if there was a situation where I needed to quickly get them out of the car.
Door actuator failed. Thereby creating potential safety hazard condition. The frequency of door actuator failures leads me to believe there is a design and/or manufacturing defect. When the dealer was contacted, their response was "the vehicle is out of warranty". I find this completly unacceptable.
Currently, two doors (driver's side and the driver's side passenger door) makes a loud grinding sound every time I automatically unlock the door. Over the last month, there have been times where I was unable to unlock either one of these doors and had to crawl into the car or out of the car from the passenger side. This apparentally is a trend in the Grand Cherokee and should be recalled due to the very serious nature of this problem.
I bought the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee car brand new, one year later we had to have the rotors replaced, six months later we had to replace the brake pads. Six months after that, the automatic door lock on the diver's side started making loud screeching noises whenever you lock and unlock the door, a dealer looked at it and estimated $700 to have it repaired. We've been having fron suspension problems, and the transmission makes a humming sound when it's in reverse. What's next?
Power door locks lock and cannot open doors. Front passenger door locked 12/23/03 and rear drivers side locked 1/11/04. You cannot get the doors open by any method.
Power locks on the Jeep have recently failed to operate properly. Unlocking the Jeep causes a loud screaching sound and now 3 locks fail to unlock leaving the passenger unable to get in or out of the vehicle. This could be considered a hazardous situation if an accident were to occur and the occupants were unable to exit the vehicle. Observation of similar reports to this complaint forum shows a track record of faulty lock acutators. Considering the potential hazard, should this not be investigated for a recall?
Eletronic door locks would not operate properly on the front passenger door side. It would make a loud whirring noise when trying to activate the locking system. It made it impossible to get in or out of the vehicle. We were lucky that there was no emergency to get out of the vehicle. I have noticed a large amount of other situations regarding this type of incident.
On 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 3 different doors have failed and you can't open the doors until you replace something called a "door actuator." Of the 5 doors on the Jeep, 3 have failed and 3 new actuators installed. 2 failed while on warranty (12/2002) and the third just failed, 12/2003.
I have taken my 2000 Grand Cherokee twice this year for replacement of the "actuator" and the door latch. This affected both doors on the passenger side of the vehicle and is now moving to the drivers side. The lock will make an awful sound while locking and unlocking. It will eventually freeze up and neither lock or unlock. Each time covered under extended warranty although paid a deductible. The dealer will not replace all at once since they have not gone "bad" yet. Thus far only 3 out of 5 doors are damaged.
When the consumer applied the brakes they pulsated, which caused the vehicle experienced extended stopping distance. Dealer notified. Consumer wouldn't let her 15 yr. Old daughter drive the vehicle in fear of the brakes failing, nor would she sell it. The vehicle had been to the mechanic many times and the problem continued to exist.. the rotors and pads were replaced several times. The driver's side door was hard to lock, and the windshield wipers worked intermittently.
Safety issue: Power door locks inoperable. 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. On three (3) seperate occassions, we have had to have three (3) seperate electronic locking systems replaced on three (3) seperate doors/hatches on this vehicle. In all three incidents, the "actuator" has failed to either lock and/or unlock each individually effected door. On one occassion, we were unable to exit the driver's door at all, thus having to climb over to the passenger's front door to exit. When we contact the manufactuer - each time - they tell us that these are "normal wear items". after scanning your sight, I find a total of twenty-one such related complaints for Jeep Grand Cherokee (not all year 2000 models) and four specifically related, year 2000 complaints. To describe the failure: The locking mechanism simply fails to engage and/or disengage and makes a higher pitched, longer than usual, whining sound - as if an electrical motor has failed. The cost of each repair has been equal to or exceeded $150 per incident. The following listed incident date (online submission field required) refers only to the latest/most current date of repair. All services for such repairs - each incident - were obtained at capitol grage, a Jeep/Chrysler dealer, in willimantic, connecicut. The vehicle was originally purchased at a now defunct, Jeep dealership in mansfield, Connecticut, named champagne Jeep/cheverolet.
