: the contact stated the vehicle transfer case in the engine shifted from 4 to 2 wheel drive. This has been a problem since the contact acquired the vehicle. The contact also expressed the vehicle overheated, but the vehicle has not been to a service dealer to evaluate or determine the problems.
The contact stated the four wheel drive was inoperative. The vehicle was taken to the dealership, and they diagnosed a problem as the transfer case. The transfer case will have to be replaced as a direct result of the wrong transmission fluid being used. The contact used the fluid the owner's manual suggested, mopar automatic transmission fluid or the equivalent labeled dexron 3. the dealership stated the fluid being used is red in color and should be amber. Both the dealership and manufacturer told the contact the owner's manual has the wrong transmission fluid information. Updated 2/7/2006 -
Air condition harness wire repair and controller unit replacement. Electrical shortage after repair blamed on battery just replaced last year. Paid $5,244 and then required to pay $500 for new cables and battery after having the vehicle back in my posession for less than 1 hour.shortage after repair blew out battery supposedly. Transfer case replaced, brakes, rotors replaced, tires pealing on walls replaced, pinion seal leak and more.
1999 Grand Cherokee Jeep, brake failure and head gasket replaced. The consumer stated while driving and without warning, the vehicle seized up. The vehicle was towed to a garage who replaced the transfer case, rack and pinion, and spider gears.
While driving 30 mph a loud grinding and clicking noise is produced from the front end. The consumer brought the vehicle to a repair shop and learned that the front drive cuppling from the transfer case malfunctioned. Please provide additional information.

Consumer complained about a transfer case problem. When driving at approximately 40 mph there was a loud clanking sound coming from the front undercarriage. Consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer, and was told the vehicle had dusty brake pads, but that was not the issue. Then, consumer was told that the constant velocity joints were leaking. Also, consumer was told that the driveshaft needed to be replaced. Consumer felt that the dealership did not know what the problem was, and perhaps was covering up the real problem. Recall campaign; component: Fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system:injectors. The consumer stated that the vehicle would not start. The consumer stated that the engine had an extended crank before starting. Fuel pump assembly and pump crank repair kit installed. The consumer stated that there is a shimmy when the brakes are applied. When sitting at a stop light having the vehicle in gear it vibrates. The left outer cv boot was leaking. The engine light came on. The consumer stated that the transmission slams into gear.
1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee - 247J transfer case transfer case failure causing loud knocking noises when accelerating and turning. Fluid (dealership certified) was changed twice and driven, but problem persisted. Changed clutch pack with new fluid for the 3rd time, but problem persisted. Replaced front drive shaft, but problem still persists. Failure still exists, but will try changing the chain in transfer case hoping to resolve problem.
My 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee (gc) limited 8 cylinder quadradrive has given me nothing but problems since I bought it in October of 2002. I had the transfer seal replaced due to it leaking, the differential makes noise, the all wheel drive does not work (all wheel drive only works in low), and the tires lock up and make a noise when I am turning. It seems that their are other 1999 Jeep gc owners out there with the same problem. How about a recall to fix this problem?
Transfer case issues on 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Since I have had the Jeep I have had to replace the seals on the transfer case multiple times. To me it appears that there is some sort of defect in its design. The seal will start to leak which causes the transfer case to lock up. This causes a loud thudding noise and the car to jerk when coming to a stop. Also, in situations where the car is cold it will not shift correctly causing excessive engine whining and inability to accelerate correctly.
