This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
While applying brakes vehicle hestitates and pulsates in front. Consumer stated that the brakes were fixed once, but still the vehicle and the steering wheel shakes.
When applying brakes at any speed vehicle sputters and jumps right and left as the disk on either side grabs and releases enabling vehicle to turn in close circles or make tight turns.
There is shaking in front end of vehicle when applying brakes. Contacted dealer. The first time this occurred the rotors were turned. The second and third time they were replaced. The last time consumer replaced with after market non Jeep rotors.
When brakes are applied while driving 55mph or more vehicle vibrates severely. Dealer has been notified. Feel free to provide any further information on this matter.

When applying brakes vehicle shakes so badly that it causes steering wheel to vibrate. Front in vibration. Consumer has taken it to a dealer twice, and was told all it needed was an adjustment. But, within 2 weeks it was shaking again.
Severe shimmy when applying brakes at speeds > 8 mph. Dealer replaced rotors 1/11/01 @ 15K miles - I paid for rotors, dealer paid labor. Service manager told me today that 30% of Jeep customers worldwide have this problem; 50% of owners in midwest. Told me that since I have already paid once, Jeep will pay full cost this time. Also indicated that since it was not "safety related" (I.e. the car still stops) no recall has ever been issued.
Brake assembly overheats causing warpage of rotors and subsequent steering shudder. Rotors are warping every 10,000 miles. Dealer has tried to correct problem with one replacement and three machining applications, two concurrent. Dealer has admitted this has been a constant problem in Grand Cherokee and has refunded money for last two brake refacings, but cannot guarantee the problem will not persist. Chrysler has not been helpful or sent technical representative to investigate. I believe this is beyond the ability of the service department to solve. I feel this is a safety issue because the shudder becomes violent at highway speeds when braking and vehicle could loose directional stability. This is only one of many faults with this vehicle (others the dealer has corrected, to their credit).
Took delivery new 3/11/1999. On 2/10/200, @ 5400 miles, dealer performed sb 05-002-99, which I think was turning the front rotors. On 9/30/2000, @10,382 miles, dealer performed sb 05-01-00, front rotor and pad replacement. On 7/2/2001, @ 14,768 miles, dealer turned front rotors. On 2/7/2002, @ 20,804 miles, dealer replaced front rotors. Every 5000 miles, the front rotors have developed unacceptable lateral runout. This vehicle is still on its original tires (and they look pretty good), but its third set of front brake rotors. Dealer reports Chrysler rep says this is the last "good will" brake repair on my vehicle. This is a design problem. It is a safety issue.
Vehicle has several jerks when decelerating and accelerating. Brake rotors(4) had to be replaced. Brake pads also had to be replaced. U-joint replaced. Ring gear and pinion problems. Transmission jerking. Sunroof vibrations when sunroof is open. Overall a nightmare of a vehicle purchase.
Brakes are pulsating when applied. Brakes and pads have been changed four times within past three years. Pads wear fast, and put too much pressure on the rotors. Dealer has been notified.
A severe shimmy(more at high speed and less at low speed) would occur when brakes are applied. Vehicle been in dealer shop on two occasions, and problem still reoccurring. Feel free to provide any further information.
During application of brake system while traveling at highway speed there is a severe vibration in vehicle. 1) 05-Apr-2000 at 14,459 miles, brake rotors were resurfaced by dealership. 2) xx-Aug-2000 at 21,408 miles, front brake rotors resurfaced, and rear rotors replaced. 3) 07-Mar-2001 at 30,871 miles, front brake rotors were replaced, and rear brake rotors were resurfaced with new brake pads installed. 4) xx-Dec-2001 at 41,000 miles, front brake rotors were resurfaced, and rear brake rotors are replaced. Service by the dealership has failed to effectively remedy the problem. Please provide any additional information / documentation.
Brakes on my Jeep have been a chronic problem in that they wear unevenly and this results in a pulsing stopping action. I understand this is called "brake fade." The dealer has repaired this problem several times and advises that it is characteristic of vehicles with four wheel drive. However, I do not consider this to be an acceptable condition that I should have to bear from a safety and cost standpoint. This problem arose early on in the life of this vehicle and continues to recur. Some repairs covered under warranty, but more recent repairs have not been covered. Dealer's attitude is good, but I wonder if Chrysler has many more of these problems with the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Steering wheel shakes when brakes applied, checked at 6920 miles service center stated it was ABS. Steering wheel violantly shakes, and at 18000 miles rotors turned, again three months later and again at 41000. The symptons are being corrected but the problem is not being fixed. Until the problem is fixed we will continue to have trouble and have to pay because the customer service hide behind thier warranty...and won't help us.
