The contact owns a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact observed a fuel leak after the vehicle was parked for a short period of time. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on three separate occasions for diagnostic testing. The technician recommended that the fuel tank not be consumed to the full capacity and that the fuel leak was not hazardous. Nar 02/25/2003. The consumer had the fuel sending fixed before a recall was issued. When the consumer called to inquire about reimbursement, he was told his vehicle was not included.

Consumer complained about fuel gauge and fuel tank problems. Fuel gauge indicated that tank was full, when in reality it had no gas. Also, there was recall 97V194000 concerning fuel tank. Manufacturer was contacted, and stated that there was no recall, and there was nothing they could do about it.

When the gas tank was filled to it's capacity, gas leaked from the top side of the tank and filled the nozzle connection to the tank. Daimler Chrysler refused responsibility.

Although there was a recall for this type of failure, dealer said vehicles made in 8/96 were not covered under recall. Called Chrysler, but they would not pay for repairs.
