The contact owns a 2010 Jeep Commander sport. The contact stated that the driver was traveling 50 mph when the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly after the brakes were depressed. Smoke also emitted from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer originally stated that the accelerator was the cause of the failure, but later stated that the floor mats were covering the accelerator pedal and caused the failure. The contact also stated that a local body shop confirmed that the brakes failed and were the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was contacted. The vehicle was not repaired.
