Commander Limited 4x4 4.7L V8

Soon after buying this vehicle new in 2007, it started randomly not starting at unpredictable times. You get in car, turn key to start, nothing. No click, nothing. In ACC position, dash, lights etc are working so it's not the battery. Took to dealership at least three times under warranty and they replaced the starter. This never fixed it. It's been an issue with this vehicle always. It doesn't happen all the time - again, very unpredictable and random.

When it is in no-start mode like this, solution usually is to push the shift lever (auto tranny) forward hard and wiggle it a little. Push on the brake. Wiggle the sifter forward some more, rub rabbits foot - turn key - it starts. One time more recently, tried putting it in neutral, and it started.

More recently, dealership service dept can't reproduce it, ie., tech gets in, turns the key, it starts. And it's like, what's this moron owner talking about it started. Um, it's random and intermittent - of course it won't do it one time at the dealership. Sometime in one's life, the service tech needs to believe the owner - yes - there is a problem.

Jeep Service Dept to date has yet to figure it out and permanently fix it. The internet is now full of lore around Jeep Commander and Grand Cherokee no start problems, youtube videos with dudes crawling under the vehicle yanking on wires, others home crafting wire harnesses, much armchair wisdom espoused about this or that or the other... where is Jeep Service and all their training on this? What is the fix?

Update from Aug 8, 2017: Jeep dealership has had the vehicle for few days - they give it a clean bill of health. Verified starter, starter harness, function of NSS, function of key ignition switch.

Commander Sport V8

  • 150,000 miles

I have owned this vehicle for 6 years. In that time I have replaced the starter five times. The first time being under 50000 miles, the second 11,000 miles later. The starter that was put on was a Chrysler product that was only warrantied for 10,000 miles. So I then went to NAPA parts which gives a 3 yr. I have put 3 NAPA starters on(under warranty). The most recent starter was replaced was less than 2 months ago. Now my commander is once again not starting. Randomly it will leave us stranded. The dash board lights up, fuel pump engages, windows, radio etc. all work. Battery is new.

The dealership has no clue since it doesn't "throw a code." I called Chrysler and the very unpleasant woman tells me she has no clue either and was not aware of this problem. Even though, there are pages of this reported on various websites. Jeep needs to acknowledge this problem. The average consumer can not afford to continue to replace a problem that never gets fixed. I have called several mechanics and everyone thinks I need another starter. I try to explain that the vehicle will start the next day or several hours later. You just never know. I have read about this on numerous other sites.

I have always been a Chrysler fan up until now that I just feel they don't stand behind their product. I also have had a recall that was issued to me in July of 2014 and the product / computer update is not available as of yet.

Commander Limited V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 75,000 miles

On two occasions my car would not start it occurred about 7 months apart however the interior and exterior lights did come on. I had the battery tested and it was fine. After about a 1/2 hour to an hour the car would start so a code to the problem could not be taken. Transmission over temp would appear when taken out the key but that was all. From everything I read about jeeps having this problem there has been no definitive answer as to what the problem actually is. People were having starters changed and still experienced the problem of failure to start.

This is aggravating to never know when I am going to get stuck with this car and I don't have tons of money to just change every thing that could possibly cause this problem. It is a complete waste of money to change parts to have the issue remain. At least if it was a true diagnosis then it would be money well spent to have it fixed for that piece of mind. At this point I can not wait to unload this car and stay far away from Jeep as I can.

Commander

  • Manual transmission

2007 Jeep Commander randomly wont start. Transmission over temp light displays on dash each time it happens. There is just a click noise when you turn the key. This is the 3rd time my Jeep has left me sit. First time I left it sit and went back about 2 hours later and it started - 2nd time left it sit in the Walmart parking lot over night and it started up in the morning - this time it has been 2 days and it wont start. Had a new starter put on less then a year ago. I have read many reviews on this issue - It seems to be a common problem. My concern is that most of the things I have read seem hit or miss. People pouring tons of money into their Jeeps without really knowing what the exact problem is. I dont have a garage I feel comfortable going to that will be honest with me so I am hoping someone can give me some kind of feedback so when I take it to the garage I can tell them my research results. Help!!!!
