CarComplaints.com Notes: Whenever a new product is introduced, there's bound to be some problems. And man oh man, does the 2006 Commander have some problems.
It's the plight of the 1st-generation adopter: you get the newest and shiniest in exchange for a handful of issues that get ironed out in future versions. But what happens when that handful of issues becomes a bucketload? The 2006 Commander has quality control issues like the door handles breaking off and the sunroof leaking. But what's truly worrisome is the electrical problems like the vehicle shutting down unexpectedly, gauges going crazy or the cruise control having a mind of its own.
Bottom line: if you want a Jeep Commander, you're better off looking at a later model year.

I purchased the Jeep new in 2006, so I've experience all of the multiple problems I've read on this site. So first to say something good about the Jeep Commander. I've own 4x4s all me driving life, and other than my Range Rover, this has been truly one of the most comfortable driving 4-wheelers I've ever owned, and the four wheel drive system has worked flawlessly, and I use it a lot. Having said this, now for the most recent problems I've experienced with the Commander. Now the seat belts are dysfunctional. First the seat belt release buckle on the passenger side quit allowing you to click in your seat belt. You had to push in the red release bottom every time you wanted to click your seat belt. Since the passenger side was seldom used, I contributed it to corrosion or something like that. A couple weeks later the driver side seat belt started to do the same thing, but not all the time. Then eventually it was all the time. It's truly a pain in the ass in the continued problems I've had with the Jeep. I'm looking for an inexpensive quick fix; maybe a seat belt extender. In additional to replacing normal wear parts like tires, brakes, fluids, filters, etc., I've also had to replace all the interior door handles at 60-100,000 miles, numerous electronic sensors starting at 45,000 miles, the engine at 130,000 miles, transmission at 210,000 miles, two drive shafts, one at 135,000 miles and one at 220,000 miles, and the CV joints. Plus other things such as replacement of AC coils, radiator coils, transmission cooling coils, I'm sure there repairs I've already forgotten about, but I love it because it drives great.
