CarComplaints.com Notes: Whenever a new product is introduced, there's bound to be some problems. And man oh man, does the 2006 Commander have some problems.

It's the plight of the 1st-generation adopter: you get the newest and shiniest in exchange for a handful of issues that get ironed out in future versions. But what happens when that handful of issues becomes a bucketload? The 2006 Commander has quality control issues like the door handles breaking off and the sunroof leaking. But what's truly worrisome is the electrical problems like the vehicle shutting down unexpectedly, gauges going crazy or the cruise control having a mind of its own.

Bottom line: if you want a Jeep Commander, you're better off looking at a later model year.

While driving al dash lights will light up and heat will shut off.. come back on and happens again. There's no certain times it happens wheneve it wants to between 1-15 times a day driving and parked. Sunroof leaks through tubes into passenger side floor board and freezes windshield if temp is low. Transmission overheated warning comes on and transmission/ and or fluid is fine. Have had all issues checked and they can not find the problem! also need is reading code that suddenly my key isn't registered since this has been happening and my auto start won't work because of the key not being linked to my car anymore. This is unsafe and eventually will stop me from being able to drive my car. The lights all come on and then go off while driving on any street any speed or even parked. Heat shuts off while lights are on and comes back on after they shut off.

While driving this vehicle through a stone tunnel on the blue ridge parkway that had no lighting within the tunnel the Jeep suffered an total electrical failure and a total blackout took place. Thankful that I was not killed and that no one else was in the tunnel at the time, the Jeep was coasted to the outside of the tunnel and off to the side on the grass. Had anyone been coming in either direction I may have had enough light but it was pitch black. I have read of hundreds of electrical failures in this Jeep vehicle and wonder why I was never notified. This is a product warranty issue for Jeep and it nearly was also responsible for vehicular homicide! the Jeep just cut off all electric and not even dashboard lights afforded visual. I have the park Ranger report and she said this most likely was total electrical failure. I have pictures from the accident as the Jeep hit the stone tunnel side and then the steering rod on the right broke. The insurance company chose to junk the Jeep and I was left without even a rental car. I have pictures and the Ranger report and my report if requested. How do I contact Jeep for a product liability complaint?

Takata recall as I was driving my car on the four lane my car started to have white rubber smelling smoke fill the car and all my dash lights went crazy, my radio kicked off and my speakers and my turn signals quit working. I started to panic and stopped on the side of the rode. I had my kids in the car so I first removed my children then tried to find the problem. At this point my car was completely full of smoke N it like as if it was burning down. My wiring in the cars passenger side rear floor board had caught on fire ! the fire burnt through my floor and my floor mats. I almost choked to death on the smoke and had to take the battery out of the car to kill the power and dump water on the floor.

Vehicle was sold with no lights in back, including break and reverse lights, broken seat belts in back seats and one back seat that does not fold down which blocks rear view, and finally with bald tires that needed to be replaced immediately. The lights were supposedly fixed by the dealership's repair shop but after only a few weeks the lights were not working. The seat belts were supposed to be replaced and we were told that replacements were ordered but the dealership never called back to confirm that they arrived and ready for installation, they still have not been replaced. We were told that the tires and seat folding down were not safety issues and had to replace the tires ourselves. The seat still does not fold down and the lights on the back of the vehicle still don't stay on.

2006 Jeep Commander with 93000. I have had serviced multiple times over brakes and suspension. Brakes will just grind when trying to stop at times. Brakes have been replaced and problem still occurs. Every mechanic has said everything looks good. Had bigotires do 3 inspections on brakes and suspension and everything checked out! suspension- I have had services 3 times. All new parts have been put on front drivers side yet problem still persist. Popping noise and squeaking when turning and hitting speed bumps or pot holes and very noisy when backing up. Lighting has also started to go off and on! I believe something is wrong with the lighting. Sometimes when I turn them on they do not come on and once I turned them off and they did not turn off and made battery go dead but once jumps they were back to normal except my back tail light which I have tried having replaced multiple times does not work anymore and front passenger side head light has some major issues! also it is very hard to see when it rains even with brand new wipers there just wasn't much thought put into the Commanders! too many blind spots and also door handles on the inside easily break off!

Takata recall my Jeep Commander has been nothing but trouble since I purchased it I have had all the recalls done by my local Jeep dealership and still have to constantly replace wheel speed (ABS) sensors and reprogram the computer. At low speeds off aproxamitly 15-20 mph I loose power like the vehicle is trying to starve itself from fuel affecting accelerate so if you pull out into a intersection it practically dies and the. When you go to brake the pedal gets hard and the vehicle keeps rolling I have to replace all 4 wheel sensor (ABS) and get computer reprogrammed for it to stop costing hundreds of dollars to do over the time that I have owned the vehicle I have learned to perform such task on my own. But I am sick and tired of every summer having to buy 4 50 dollar sensors and getting charged 125 dollars to redo the computer and not to mention when the Jeep decides to act up it put my child and mother to my child in serious danger never knowing when it will misfunction again and like many others I am upside down on the payments of the vehicle due to all the money invested.

I purchased the vehicle in 2010 and within a month some electrical issues were intermittently occurring. The dealer said the ignition had to be replaced and did so. These problems seemed to continue thought not often. The symptoms are as follows-first the lights start flickering and then go out. All of the dash components go out including the speedometer, fuel gage, radio etc. The ac fan also turned off. This condition did not stop the vehicle from running it just turned off the electrical components there was however a problem with stalling, a separate issue from the electrical issue., a few times while in the vehicle was stopped it would stall when stopping or starting off again. This was true in reverse and forward. I was never really worried about safety until last night when the lights went out while driving on a dark curvy country road. It was only for a few seconds but it was terrifying. This issue needs to be dealt with. In 2015 there were several recalls issued and they seemed to be related to the problems I was having. I had all of the recall notices dealt with. The software upgrades and the ignition replacement. This didn't solve the problem. In fact

My Jeep upon being on the highway and in the right lane suddenly slowed down to the point of stalling and I had to bring the car to the side of the road and began shutting it off when coincidently the the light went on in the roof of the car and my headlight dimmed. I called the Jeep place for an oil change and they diagnoised the car and did a recall on the ignition switch and told me the powertrain transfer case is bad and thermostat leaking from the housing and 4 wheel drive failed. I have never used the 4 wheel drive as I recently purchased the car at the end of April and own it for just 7 months. They said it will cost me over $750 dollars to be fixed. I called Chrysler and they said my vehicle is not included however on your web site NHTSA campain# 13V175000 seems to apply to my diagnoised problems. I love my car but this is a defect in manufacturing and not something that I have done. The previous owner had this car constantly maintained at executive Jeep in North haven ct. I want my car fixed at Chrysler's cost not mine. I drive my car with my grandchildren in it and now feel it is unsafe.. please help me. I have all records for the car and the diagnostic information should you need it. I also have howard the manager at Jeep phone #.

I cannot "safely" drive my vehicle as the car goes into neutral on it's own" there have been many a times that I have been on the highway traveling 55 mph or more and all of a sudden, the car would slightly jerk and then loose complete power. I would step on the accelerator but no change, I would simply pull off to the side of the highway. Wait a few minutes and eventually the car would start up again? the headlights and interior lights go off and on? the face plate to the radio system gets hot? and has affected the illumination of the dashboard instrumental lighting? this is not a VIN thing but a Jeep Commander thing? such an attractive vehicle with so many many issues? safety issues. And the company has yet to fulfill the recalls? its been more than a year? dealers keep telling the consumers, the part isn't available yet? I need to be able to drive to work, this has cost me additional money to buy a reliable vehicle to get me to work. I paid over $35,000 for it, and meanwhile it sits in the garage. A lot of money for your average joe to fork out. Who's going to force the manufacturer to honor the recall"

1.it leaks. Whenever there is rain I have 2-3 inches of water in the front foot area on both sides. In addition to that water leaks through the lining and front pillars of the truck landing on the dashboard. What is this about? this not only results in my time to drain out the water it also leads to a gross musty smell. After a rain I can hear the water swishing back and forth in ht roof of my car. This is rediculous. Further this issue has done something to the electrical system. 2.the electrical system. The driver's side door window/lock/mirror switches no longer work. So that means that the driver's side window hasn't been down in forever. That makes life quite difficult. The next electrical problem is that for no apparent reasons lights come on. As I driving the interior lights just start to shine bright all of them at the same time. One night I woke up at three in the morning to find my headlights on. I tried to turn them off but couldn't. it eventually wore the battery out. Lastly electronics wise is my dashboard lights flicker crazy. 3.the door handles. Behind the actual door handle is plastic. This has all broken away. I am sure it is just a matter of time before I can open the doors at all. 4.it just stops running. Five times now as I am driving (streets or highway) the truck has just shut down. Fortunately it starts right back up but this is extemely dangerous. This form asks for dates...all of this is ongoing.

When driving car at night the dash lighting and the head lights went dark for 5 minutes and came back on, driver had to pull over and almost caused an accident due to no lighting. This has happened 3 times in the past 3 weeks very concerning. Headlights and dash lighting should not go bad before the power train on any car built ever.thank god the person driving was calm enough to handle the distraction.

Dash lights and gauges began flickering and on / off. Eventually over a period of months, all vehicle lights began occasional going on and off completely. This included head lights, tail lights, dash lights. Began doing this more and more often. Do a lot of mechanical work myself. Saw that this was a fairly common problem with Jeep as reported on the internet. Cause was a faulty light control switch on the steering column. Bought a new control arm/switch for about $130. And installed it myself. Problem appears to be repaired now. Should be a safety recall for these switches in losing all inside and outside lights while driving at night. Have checked around and do not see any recall as of yet for this problem.

As I was driving down the road my automobile turned off and stopped working while driving! this is very dangerous and is very ridiculous considering I received a recall notice over 1 year ago concerning this problem. I make every attempt to ensure the functions of my vehicle are running properly for the safety of my family. I have young children and they could have been seriously injured had we been involved in an accident at the time of my vehicle's failure to operate correctly, due to the manufacturers irresponsibility of taking care of this problem within a proper time frame! Jeep and local dealers have been contacted multiple times to try to correct this problem, with no help from them it has yet to be repaired!

Just as I was slowing down to 30 mph to enter a parking lot the entire dashboard lit up and then all lights faded and turned off. The ac turned off and the radio turned off. The car still continued driving but the power steering was gone, causing the car to shake and jolt mid turn. The brakes weren't working as they normally would resulting in a very dangerous situation had any other car been close to me at the time. I took it to my mechanic right away and he tested everything, including the alternator and the battery. Everything was functioning at 100% capacity and he couldn't find a reason for the check engine light to be on. This has happened 3 more times. I am unable to drive the vehicle in fear that it will break down or my family or another driver.

While driving home from work I noticed my truck was slowing down without me applying the brakes and once I did apply the brakes I was informed I had only one brake light working. At that time I immediately went to a part store to have the fuses check and I purchased more bulbs and found out that was not the problem. The service department informed me that this was electrical problem not even the new bulbs worked and the fuses were good as well. I purchased this vehicle in October 2014 from drive time of columbus, ga and was not informed of the recall. The carfax associated with this vehicle did not mention any defects as a matter of fact the carfax listed this vehicle as almost perfect. I have contact Chrysler regarding this matter and they too let me know this problem was part of the recall but they are not able to correct the problem because they do not have the parts and it is May 2015. Now I am driving a truck that is really not safe. I spoke with the dealership where I purchase the truck without any resolution. They are only concerned with the payments., can something be done? can this dealership be made to give me my money back I have spent on this truck or give me another vehicle which I afraid to trust anyone at this point. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
