CarComplaints.com Notes: Whenever a new product is introduced, there's bound to be some problems. And man oh man, does the 2006 Commander have some problems.

It's the plight of the 1st-generation adopter: you get the newest and shiniest in exchange for a handful of issues that get ironed out in future versions. But what happens when that handful of issues becomes a bucketload? The 2006 Commander has quality control issues like the door handles breaking off and the sunroof leaking. But what's truly worrisome is the electrical problems like the vehicle shutting down unexpectedly, gauges going crazy or the cruise control having a mind of its own.

Bottom line: if you want a Jeep Commander, you're better off looking at a later model year.

The headlights begin to flash on and off intermittently. The lights within the instrument control panel are not illuminated and flash as well. I have to manually turn the lights off then turn them back on numerous times to get the flashing to stop. It is a very scary, dangerous, and embarrassing problem when it happens. This has been an ongoing issue for a few years now. The dealer was not notified. There are no recalls or warranties related to the failure.

I own a 2006 Jeep Commander ltd. With the 5.7L hemi. Date of manufacturer was 06/06. In the past year my Commander has began stalling out sporadically while stopped completely. It occurs at any time, night or day, usually only when the engine is cold or cool. The problem occurs when I come to a complete stop at a stop sign, stop light, or any other complete stop in drive or reverse. When I come to a complete stop the RPM's drop and the vehicle stalls out. No warning lights or check engine lights show up on the dash. When it occurs at night all the external vehicle lights turn off, thus making me and my vehicle vulnerable to other traffic. It does not trip a code in the computer so the dealer cannot diagnose the problem. The first time I took my vehicle in for maintenance regarding the problem the dealer recommended I replace the egr valve so I did what they recommended. The problem still occurs. The dealer advised me that they cannot duplicate the problem therefore there is nothing they can do to correct the problem. When my vehicle stalls out it typically will do it 3-5 additional times per trip and it happens at least once per week. I have read that numerous people are having the same problems and Jeep has no fix. I am very concerned with this problem because it is unsafe as I was nearly struck by another vehicle. Recently I was traveling down the street at night and was preparing to turn left at a stop light. I stopped in the middle of the intersection to wait for the oncoming traffic to pass, when my car stalled out and all of the lights turned off (headlights, running lights, etc) making my vehicle completely invisible to traffic. I was unable to move the vehicle until I placed it in neutral and had to restart the engine and move out of the intersection. Please look further into this problem with 2006 Jeep Commanders as this is not something that should happen.

While driving the dash lights went out and headlights started flashing on and off. Took it to dealer and they found no trouble. The vehicle keeps blowing rear tail light bulbs, and blower motor at times does not work on certain speeds. Cigarette lighter/power outlets stopped working even though fuse is good. Power windows intermittently stop working. The transmission went out around 62,000 miles. Had dealer replace transmission and now at 102,000 miles the transmission will loose drive when shifting into 3rd under moderate acceleration. You then have to pull off the road and put the car in park, then back in drive to regain drive. Transmission also "surges" under light throttle conditions at low speeds(10-20mph). I have contacted Jeep and their response was that because of the mileage on the vehicle they could do nothing. I feel that the flashing lights and the loss of drive while in traffic are major safety issues. I have been researching this vehicle and found may other owners with the exact same problems.

I purchased the 2006 Commander in June 2010. The first 6 weeks I had the vehicle I loved it. The first incident I had with the vehicle was the service park assist warning came on and stayed on for two days, then went off on its own prior to getting an appointment to have it checked. The next incident happened when I was idling in traffic at a stoplight. Every indicator light on the dash came on and the vehicle started to stall but did not completely stall out. Since that episode I have had issues with the driver side front window and passenger side rear window not functioning properly (at times won't roll up or down from either control). More recently I have had increasing episodes (two to three times per month) of the dash lighting up, headlights dimming and the vehicle losing power (so far always while parked or shifting from park to drive), as well as the service park assist warning and window issues. After hearing of a coworker with a 2007 Commander having some of the same issues I began searching the internet and have found numerous complaints of the same issues as mine. I am afraid to drive this vehicle with my children inside in the event that it would stall out on the highway and I would not be able to control it. I spoke with the dealer that sold me the vehicle yesterday and they have agreed to look at it free of charge this morning since there is no warranty on it now, but I still am not sure I want to keep this vehicle any longer. Chrysler needs to recall these vehicles and fix this issue. I used to be a die hard Jeep fan...but no longer! I am surprised that I have not found any reports of death or serious injury as a result of these electrical issues with this particular model.

Headlights and interior lights shut off while driving at night at highway speed, but the radio remained on and the engine was also working. All the lights on the instrument panel flipped on and then off with the exception of the base esp and the traction control lights, they stayed on. Power steering and power brakes were working and if it had not been dark out, could have drove home. The vehicle did come back to normal working order within a few seconds. This record of events happened 3 times within a few minutes at 10 pm and was very scary. I brought the vehicle to the Jeep dealership and they replaced the power junction block. They said there were multiple codes they found in the system but the fault that leaped out to them was U0200.

During regular drive of the car, I experienced major electrical shut down. It does not happen very often. I noticed that is happening in summer time more often than in winter time. I noticed it for a first time 2 years ago and reported to local service dealer. They told me to keep an eye on it and to tell them if I notice any trend. Except for summer/winter, I couldn't notice any other trend. Last summer it was happening quite often and after bringing it to the service, they couldn't find cause of the problem. I think they performed some recall firmware update (08V-203 I think) but I still have same electrical problem. I don't have engine stall however. Last night (July 3rd 2009) it happen to me for the first time during night and I just realized how serious safety issue it actually is. While driving home with my family, everything in the car (headlights, ac, stereo (except lcd display) all lights on the dashboard (except P R N D gear indication)) went off for a few seconds and came back on. It happened 15-20 times in 30 minutes time frame. At one point after ~10th interruption, check engine light came on (error code U1411). So, all lights disappeared while driving at night putting me and my family at risk of an serious accident. I don't have confidence in this car any more unless there is a permanent fix for this problem.

Reference complaints 10244597, 10247128. Today, driving in the rain, lights dimmed and car hesitated, eventually stalling while in motion. While we were at a stop, the car again stalled and took several tries to restart. I no longer drive with the children in the car, and have not since the previous incident at 61K. I have tried contacting Jeep through my dealer, with no response. Today I sent an email via their website, however, I am not hopeful of any response. This will be the final time I will file a complaint, as I have called the bank and told them to come and get the car. I can only hope that the person who considers purchasing my car, as I am sure another unscrupulous salesman will put the car up for sale, does his or her research and finds the complaints I have filed here and with the pa attorney general's office.

November 24 evening leaving fuji (children in car) November 30 morning on way to work ? hit mailbox (baby in car) December 5 morning on way to work ? dies turning out of subdivision and stalls in middle of street (baby in car) there was one other instance when I had all kids with me?it was prior to Nov 24 but I do not recall the actual date all of the instances the engine stalled, the lights (when on) went out, I lost the ability to steer and brake as well. The mph ranged from 4 or 5 mph to 35 mph. There were times when it was warm and days that it was cold. Nothing seemed to standout as a possible "trigger" I took car to dealer after the November 24th incident. Tony in the service department said there was really nothing that they could do unless it was a problem they could "make happen" when they drove it. A few days later I wrecked into a mailbox when my Jeep stalled and I lost steering and braking capability....I am lucky it was not head on with a large truck or a tree.
