CarComplaints.com Notes: Whenever a new product is introduced, there's bound to be some problems. And man oh man, does the 2006 Commander have some problems.

It's the plight of the 1st-generation adopter: you get the newest and shiniest in exchange for a handful of issues that get ironed out in future versions. But what happens when that handful of issues becomes a bucketload? The 2006 Commander has quality control issues like the door handles breaking off and the sunroof leaking. But what's truly worrisome is the electrical problems like the vehicle shutting down unexpectedly, gauges going crazy or the cruise control having a mind of its own.

Bottom line: if you want a Jeep Commander, you're better off looking at a later model year.

I was driving down the hwy and my vehicle turned off. I lost power steering breaks and was not able to properly maintain control of my vehicle in order to avoid an accident. This had happened twice before this time, and I looked to see that there was a recall on my Jeep for an ingition switch and the the exact discription of what would happen if my car was effected fit my situation. I then called Jeep and advised them of this and they said I neeeded to have it diagnoised by a Jeep dealership. I had the vehicle towed at my expensense and rented a car at my expense. The dealership confirmed my assumption and in fact the issue I was experiencing is part of the recall. Jeep now tells me they don't have the parts and they have not made a decision on whether it's neccessary to provide a replacement vehicle until they have a resolve. Am I supposed to be without a vehicle or potentially drive mine with 3 children, and potentially loose power again causing a loss of control" what I am supposed to do from here"

When almost stopped the engine revved up like the vehicle was power braking..it happened twice on Jan 15, 2015 and again on jan16, 2015...it threw us forward and thankfully we had enough distance between us and the vehicle stopped at the red light in front of us that we did not hit it....I consider this a safety hazard. It makes me leery to drive when it is acting like this...we did not have any previous problems with the Jeep before this date. I reported this to Chrysler and they told me there was nothing they could do about it..I would need to take it to a dealer and have it checked out at my expense. We have not driven the vehicle since Jan. 16th.

Bought this Commander 08/02/14, about two weeks after driving it. It started dropping out of gear and getting stuck in 3rd gear. And when driving on the highway it would completely shut down, I sent it back to where I bought it. For them to fix the problem being I haven't even made my first car payment. And the gave me a run around for two weeks saying they was waiting on parts. Then said they had it and had my Jeep for almost 4 weeks. Before getting my Jeep. Now its 01/02/15 and its doing it again. I cant make it back and forth to work. Or get my kids. With my Jeep stuck in third gear and dieing for no reason.

2006 Jeep Commander idling up on its own and engine made a loud noise. The dealer informed the consumer, the noise was normal for a hemi engine. The consumer was then informed, the problem was the throttle. Also when it rained, the consumer discovered water on the driver's side floor. The dealer was unable to find a leak.

While attempting to get on the highway the Jeep lost power at approximately 35mph from the on ramp on to the right lane of the freeway. All the lights shut off, all the gauges shut down, and the vehicle began to slow down. It lasted approximately 4-5 seconds, and after stepping on the accelerator, the Jeep re-engaged and was able to be driven to a safe destination. The Jeep is under recall P41 for ignition switch issues, which may or may not be causing the issues, but the parts are not available from Chrysler. The parts have not been manufactured and/or distributed. It is possible the vehicle has a bad control module. The recall for faulty control modules was issued Sept. 21, 2014 but this make and model was not covered in that recall... although it seems likely it is having similar issues.

While traveling on an expressway in central Michigan, I was using the cruise control to maintain a speed of 75 mph. With no warning at all, the mechanical components of the vehicle shut down, leaving my Jeep "dead in the highway". I was able to steer and brake, but the vehicle would not respond to acceleration by pressing the gas pedal. I pulled off to the shoulder, luckily without incident. Turned the key to the "off" position and waited about 10 seconds. I turned the key to the "on" position and it started back up. I cautiously drove at a considerably slower speed until I was able to get to a rest stop. When I got to my destination I found a local auto parts store and had them do a diagnostic check. It showed a maf sensor gone bad. Mass air flow sensor was replaced. Hoping that was the issue, after several days, my family and I headed back home on the other side of the state. While driving about 60 mph with cruise control, there were no issues. I figured the problem was fixed. Unfortunately, I was wrong. As I reached the highway where the speed limit is 70 mph, I accelerated to 70 mph with the cruise control. As soon as I broke the 70 mph point, the car mechanically stalled again as I was trying to merge onto the busy highway. Again, luckily, I made it safely to the shoulder and restarted. I was able to exceed 70 mph on the way home without using the cruise control. Concerned for my pregnant wife, toddler son, and my own safety, as this happened on a busy highway at a high rate of speed; with no warning lights or sounds.

Vehicle seem to loose power while cruising at or around 45 mph or when engages 4th gear. RPM's drop really quick from 3500 to almost 1500 RPM's in matters of second. Increasing the risk of a rear end collision if trying to overtake another vehicle or driving up hill, dealer can't find problem. Problems happens every time under any weather condition.

While I was driving on the highway I had my cruise control set at 55 mph as I came into a 35 mph zone I had tapped my brakes and then came to a red light where I had to stop, when the light turned green I then turned on state route 348 where the speed limit is back to 55 when I pushed the button to resume, my 06 Jeep Commander accelerated to a very high speed as if I pushed the peddle to the floor. When I pushed the break it then turned the cruise control off, luckily there were no cars in front of me or I would have crashed into the rear of their vehicle at a high rate of speed. At this point I cannot use my cruise control because this happens every time I try (note: I always make sure there is no cars in front of me).

Hello, my 2006 Jeep Commander started stalling out over a year ago and has stalled on me on and off various times at different speeds but usually at a higher rate of speed, which has been very scary. I have chosen not to drive the vehicle anymore and now it is sitting in my driveway and I am driving a 1991 Honda because I cannot afford to buy a new car at this time. I just paid this Jeep off and now I cannot drive the vehicle. The dealer fixed the one recall on the vehicle called the front control module and it ran fine for a couple of weeks and now once again the car stalled out while I was headed to a camping trip with my kids a couple months ago going 50 mph and almost caused an accident. I was almost hit by a semi and several cars were honking and trying to avoid my Jeep. I lose all power steering and there are no notifications that the car will stall so it is very scary and dangerous for me and my children. I am so upset that I cannot drive the car and feel safe. I have contacted Jeep and they have a recall for 2006 Jeep Commanders that covers up to January 2006 and my vehicle was made in March so they told me there is nothing they can do. The recall was for the PCM which my car has the same code on the diagnosis but now they are telling me to take it to the dealer and I have to pay for this. I really hope that this situation can be resolved by Jeep stepping up and taking care of this issue for the safety of people.

Was driving the vehicle first noticed the electric mirrors turned upward and unable to correct. Then the left window went down and moves up or down at random. The electric door locks became inoperative from driver side. The warning gauges started to go off and on and display started to flash different problems with the vehicle. While driving the next day the cruise control went off and everything started flashing this has happened several times and have put the vehicle in the shop. I have a video that I took while driving.

This vehicle has numerous recalls related to all the problems our Jeep has. There is 0 recall for our VIN. The vehicle surges when driving up hills. The car won't start sometimes because the shifter control thinks it is in drive when it is in park. The cruise control does not work and the 4 wheel drive kicks in when driving at high speeds and jumps the car.
