CarComplaints.com Notes: Whenever a new product is introduced, there's bound to be some problems. And man oh man, does the 2006 Commander have some problems.
It's the plight of the 1st-generation adopter: you get the newest and shiniest in exchange for a handful of issues that get ironed out in future versions. But what happens when that handful of issues becomes a bucketload? The 2006 Commander has quality control issues like the door handles breaking off and the sunroof leaking. But what's truly worrisome is the electrical problems like the vehicle shutting down unexpectedly, gauges going crazy or the cruise control having a mind of its own.
Bottom line: if you want a Jeep Commander, you're better off looking at a later model year.
I was driving home from seeing mother in law @ nursing home rehab, on residential back road speed limit 55, had cruise set at 55, roads were wet it was raining and all of a sudden my Jeep accelerated up to 75 mph as if I put the peddle to the color, my head went back in my headrest. I had to put my brakes on, thankfully I was able to slow it down. This is the first issue of this sort I have had. I have other issues with it but have to be discussed on other note.to say the least, I am not happy about this 75 mph episode!!!!
Was traveling with cruise control engaged when suddenly the vehicle accelerated at full throttle from 65 mph to 80 mph. It was still accelerating when I stepped on the brake and the cruise control disengaged as usual. After that when I tried to "set" the cruise at my desired speed the vehicle would immediately accelerate at full throttle every time. After 10 tries or so it began doing something different. Now when I activate cruise the word "cruise" shows up on my dash but when I press "set" the the vehicle does not change speed or begin to cruise. The word "cruise" just goes out on my dash as if I pressed the button to deactivate crusie.
Not sure what the fix for this, but I just got this vehicle used about two months ago and have loved until now. I am a Jeep fan, but this is getting very aggrevating and my foot is getting sick of the 36 mile commute one way. Any help would be great.
Update from Sep 9, 2009: Took it to the dealer I bought it from. There were no codes. They sent me to the Jeep dealership. They couldn't figure out what it was, so they threw parts at it. The first was the servo for the cruise control. Luckily I had purchased an extended warranty, because that was a $500 bill plus diagnostic fee off $99. That didn't fix it so they replaced the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). That fixed it! Oh, and that is covered by the manufacturer warranty. The warranty for this part is lifetime and is mandated by the government for the manufacturerer to replace at no cost to the customer. So, if you have this problem, have the dealership change this part first since it looks like the probable fix, and it costs you nothing. Over all it cost me $45 for half the diagnostic fee.
