It's the plight of the 1st-generation adopter: you get the newest and shiniest in exchange for a handful of issues that get ironed out in future versions. But what happens when that handful of issues becomes a bucketload? The 2006 Commander has quality control issues like the door handles breaking off and the sunroof leaking. But what's truly worrisome is the electrical problems like the vehicle shutting down unexpectedly, gauges going crazy or the cruise control having a mind of its own.
Bottom line: if you want a Jeep Commander, you're better off looking at a later model year.

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that while driving approximately 60 mph, the engine stalled without any warning. The vehicle was coasted to the side of the road. The contact disconnected the battery and then reconnected it in order to restart the engine. The vehicle resumed in normally. The failure recurred on a later date. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing in which a trouble code was not detected. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 82,000....updated 01/13/14 according to the invoice, the dealer found the PCM and FCM had internal open circuits. Updated 01/15/14
Sept 7 the engine just cut out of gear and stopped running had to pull over to the side of the road before being hit from behind as it stalled.pulled over shut off the engine, restarted it and it was firm...drove a few miles and the light went off. The same thing just happened again on I-95 in baltimore traveling at 65 mph. Engine light came on. Pulled over shut off the engine, restarted it and it was firm...drove a few miles and the light went off.
I was driving and when I accelerated the car seemed very sluggish and hesitant to switch gears. As I approached the stop light and came to a stop I noticed the car stalled. So I turned it off and restarted it. This has happen twice now that the car has just stalled. I have now noticed that since this incident my car has been idling rough and has been vary sluggish while driving, especially up hills. I am worried for my safety that this will happen again while I am driving.
It saddens me to write this letter concerning the poor service I received on my 2006 Jeep Commander at one of your dealerships. I purchased the car last November in manassas, va, and the car ran great up until about a month ago, when all of the indicator lights would come on and then the car would abruptly shut-off. This behavior went on for about a week and then I took it to the dealer (darcars Chrysler Jeep Dodge of new carrollton) located at X your Jeep service center diagnosed the problem to be the PCM assembly which cost about $800, and was not covered by my extended warranty. After negotiating with the gwc warranty company, they agreed to pay half, which was $500 and we paid the balance of $577. After authorizing the repair, I was called on Saturday, August 17th to pick up the vehicle. Ironically, when I got in the vehicle, it wouldn't start., so the mechanic had to give me a jump. After having the car home for a few days, the problem re-appeared again. The same exact symptoms! I called the Jeep dealership and the service center manager, leo, told me to bring the car back. This time I requested a rental car so I could continue to go to work while they diagnose my car again. They kept my care through the labor day holiday and informed me it was my battery. This doesn't make sense. I never had a problem with the battery until they started working on the car, so I had to pay an additional $277 (including car rental charges) for a new battery. I picked up the car yesterday, September 5, 2013, and this morning, I brought my daughter to school and the problem occurred again! I am beyond upset and frustrated. I have spent over $800, and my car is still not reliable.
I purchased the Commander in September 2012. It ran great for a few months and then it started to stall. I replaced the maps sensor and tps sensor and it's still stalling. The stalling is at random and has happened many time while I was on the highway going 65+. that's exteremly dangerous and this issue should have been resolved by now. Doing research online I know see that there is thousands of people with this very same issue and no one has successfully resolved it. There is an obvious defect with this Jeep and Chrysler needs to be held accountable. I blame myself for not doing any proper research before purchasing. I will never buy another Chrysler product again.

I have just purchased this used 2006 Jeep Commander 1 week ago. The vehicle is in great condition, no previous accidents, no engine lights/error codes. On the 2nd day of owning the Jeep I experienced my first stall, and since then 4 more stalls. There is no engine lights, error codes, etc. The vehicle seems to be 100% okay, however the vehicle has just shut off 4 times losing brakes, steering, lights, etc - whether I am moving or at a stop. At first I thought "I must have bought a lemon" but I have been reading through several forums and blogs that there are 100's if not 1,000's of people who are experiencing the same issue with their 5.7L hemi Commander, and some of the blogs date back to 2006 when these vehicles were brand new with less than a thousand miles on them. One person actually suffered an accident due to this electrical issue - losing control of steering and brakes. Because their is no engine codes or lights dealerships are not assessing the issue at all or are just throwing parts at it hoping it is fixed and charging the customer a boat load of money. Several people have identified that the issue potentially resides in the PCM and the ignition coils, some say that the coils put of an em interference that is disrupting the PCM. Regardless - Chrysler needs to get this fixed so no one else gets hurt, or killed.

The vehicle resumed normal function and was able to be driven to a private mechanic. The contact was informed that the throttle position and exhaust sensors had failed. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was 131,000. The VIN was unavailable.
I was driving and the car engine light came on and then the car started to lose accelerating at 60 mph and I had to pull to the side of the ride and re start the car and I was on the freeway going to work which is very dangerous can someone please help this is the car that I use everyday to go to work and I only had just car for almost 2 years and when I purchase a car I expect that it will last for me while I'm making the payments and I have 3 more years to pay on the car I don't know what to do about the issue. I have let the dealership only work on my car since I purchase the vehicle. Chrysler performs all my oils changes tune up and everything that I need to have down and its not fair that the truck was discontinue I feel like the company knows that the truck is having the problems and nobody wants to do anything about it.
On the evening of 5/04/2013 while driving on the highway at a rate of between 65 & 70 mph my headlights along with my entire dashboard and instrument panel begin flickering and eventually went out! I pulled over turned the engine off and restarted it the headlight came on immediately, however the instrument panel flickered for a bit then eventually illuminated. Went into autozone (@#$%) got a reading, was told it was a minor issue and to get it checked out. A couple days go by really not driving it much a little nervous, however when starting the vehicle none of the instrument panel is working, thy tachometer needle, the speedometer nothing, however the engine was running and it would shift in and out of gear, but it would jerk and stall and whenever I tried to make a left or right turn the brakes would grind and screech! "yites" thank god, we have another vehicle! anyway I called a local Chrysler dealership and was told that I would have to be charged a diagnostic fee of $130 for each component tested"?" really! anyway it gets better I called Chrysler-Jeep manufacturer and they told me that although my car was doing exactly what millions of other recalled Commanders made in the same year 2006 were doing, my "VIN" number wasn't on the recall list, gooooo figure! so yeah, although my Jeep shifts in and out of gear on the highway, cluster board and headlights flicker off and it stalls like it going to shut off! no cigar! I guess I'll bring to where I purchased it from and use my "max care warranty" god give me the strength!

Jeep Commander stalls at driving speeds in which has almost caused 3 vehicle accidents, bas esp and traction control light is on and malfunctioned, all wheel drive malfunction. Dealer claims internal fault in front control module.
I was driving down the highway at 55mph. And out of nowhere the car RPM's dropped to 0 and the car died. As I pumped on the gas I looked in the rearview to make sure I was not going to get hit. After that I turned the car off in the middle of the highway and put on my hazards. It then turned on and after will go to 2 RPM's and then start to jerk back and forth. I have taken it to the dealership 3 times so far and as of now the 3rd time and 3rd with a rental it finally happened to the mechanic at the dealership. And he has no clue his words. So in a two week frame time I have only had my Jeep 4 days why because they cant even figure out the problem. I have reported it to Chrysler dealership and checked for a recall and they said there is no recall as of yet. I worry because this could cause a accident and typically I have my wife and two children in the Jeep with me. If U go to carcomplaints.com and look up. This model U will see there are up to 60 more incidents. But the dealership/Chrysler has yet to do anything. Hopefully it does not seriously harm the owner of the Jeep or a person who hits them.
My Jeep Commander 2006 shifts automatically to neutral while driving, you feel a strong pull and a loud sound coming from the engine, suddenly the car is in neutral and the gas pedal doesn't work even if pressing it. The check engine light turns on for 2 or 3 days. This problem can cause a fatal accident if this happens while driving at a higher speed, I'm scared to drive this car. I took this car to get the transmission fixed twice and I still have the same problem, it is clearly not a transmission problem now that I think about it. Also the dash lights and headlights start flashing while driving, including the ac it shuts off while lights are flashing. I called Chrysler to let them know about this problem and they said my car doesn't have a recall, I don't know what else to do, I've spent more than 5,000 dlls trying to fix something that cannot be fixed, I need help!
I was driving down the road and the engine just turned off, coasted to the side of the road and turned off the key and restarted engine, continuing down the road it happened again. It seems to have gone away and I made it home ok but my baby was in the car, what if I had been in a situation that prevented my safe pull over and we got into an accident.
I bought this car from a used dealership I have only owned this vehicle for about 3 months. Have been having trouble for the last month and a half. And it all began on the interstate. I was traveling on the interstate doing about 75 and it just shut off in the middle of a cluster of cars and I had to go over 2 lanes to get to the shoulder. I lost steering and brakes within 10 seconds. One of the most scariest rides ever. I am now afraid to travel on the interstate with this vehicle. Since this has happened it has shut off an additional 5 times I took it to the dealership cause the engine light was on and they said it was a map sensor, I have replaced this twice already. Now it doesn't idle right and looses power in between 30 and 35 mph. And the engine light has once again came on. Haven't had it checked yet cause it is a Saturday night guess I will have to take it somewhere on Monday.
My 2006 Commander stopped accelerating in fact it felt like I was driving against a wind blowing headon faster then I was driving, then the Jeep started jumping like a hick-up then my tail lights stopped working and lower dash lights went out and my warning lights in dash came on, the vehicle stalls out at idle or at start of acceleration not very good took to dealer was told I need a new front control module and new cooling fan, nwe speed relay costing $1063 im not to sure about it and they tell me that it has no recall ??
While driving down interstate, engine just stopped. Power brakes and steering stopped working also. Made it to shoulder of road and took several minutes to restart. Check engine light is on also. Previous day 4/23/13, the traction control light came on, but has since gone out.

The vehicle stalled while we were driving down the road. There wasn't any jerking feeling it simply shut off. We had started to slow for an upcoming traffic light. This is the second time this has happened. The first time we were backing up into the road and it stalled.
Vehicle is a 2006 Jeep Commander 4X4 limited with the 4.7L engine. Vehicle has suddenly stalled 4 times while driving in the last 6-8 weeks. Vehicle stalled while backing out of parking space, driving 15-20 mph on a city street, while idling at a stop sign, and while accelerating from a stop light. These are the first occurrences in the 4 years we have owned the vehicle.
