This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
I was pulling out into traffic and the car transmission just stopped going. It almost cost me my life. The check engine, service transmission, service parking brake, and the traction control system all lit up on the car. This is the 2nd time this happened. I took it to the dealer and was told that all Jeep Cherokee manufactured in 2015, 2016 (may also include my 2017) have had this problem. It took them forever to figure it out. In the meantime, I'm incurring rental car fees and have zero idea of what it will cost to fix. Jeep should recall and fix this problem at their expense not that of the owner. This happened approximately 1 year ago same thing except that the vehicle did not stop moving it just took forever to get out of first/second gear.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while the vehicle was in reverse or driving at 55 mph, the vehicle independently shift to 1st gear without warning, and the front wheel seized intermittently. The contact restarted the vehicle and the vehicle operated as intended. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 58,000.
Dash board service shifter light comes on and on the floor shifter lights are also lit. Has occurred on both city and highway driving in motion. I have to pull off the road, turn vehicle off and restart. Has occurred more often recently. It is a dangerous specific motion. I am submitting this incident into this NHTSA database for further investigation.
We bought this car used, so no longer have a warranty first of all... but 3 times so far in this little amount of time, the dash will light up & then "service shifter" pops up. It will not go off until you turn your car off...which if your driving down the interstate, you will have no access to your speed or anything. I looked it up, & our car is not the only one to do this...& dealerships claim they have never heard of it.
The car's cruise control was engaged while climbing a slight hill on the freeway. The car failed to stop accelerating at 60 mph (set speed limit). The cruise control button nor pressing the brakes would disengage the system. After approximately 10 seconds, the car accelerated to 75 mph and finally disengaged. This was during the night, with moderate rush hour traffic on highway 16 near port orchard, wa. The dealer (West hills Chrysler, bremerton wa) cannot find an error code and refuses to repair the vehicle. I deem the vehicle unsafe to drive while using the cruise control system.
Getting a service shifter light coming on while driving on both highway and city streets while moving. All the shift positions light up on the gear shift and the main display shows "service shifter". after research, I find many many complaints of this same problem on multiple Jeep Cherokee message boards online. Many stating that it comes back after "repair". https://ca.cargurus.com/cars/discussion-T68742_ds990296 first occurrence was in November of 2019. No rhyme or reason to when it happens.
While in motion, a service shifter notification pops up. At the same time, all of the gear indicator lights next to the gear shifter light up. Over the past 3 weeks this has happened 4 times, 2 of which have occurred in the past 2 days and 66 miles apart. I've attached photos of the notifications from the 2 most recent occurrences, along with a photo of the illuminated gear indicators. A quick internet search revealed this is a very common issue with this vehicle with hundreds of complaints across various Jeep forums.
Service shifter light came on and gear shift lights are all red, P, R, N, D during motor operations turning/pulling into my neighborhood. Approx. Speed was less than 20 mph. Upon shifting to park and turning the vehicle off and then back on the error message disappears and shifter lights are no longer red. Has happened three (3) weeks in a row on wed, wed, and tues at approx. 5:45 pm. Service appoint scheduled tomorrow 02/19/20 with the manufacturer. Approx. Mileage on vehicle when error first occurred was 43K. Was told the power train warranty may not cover the issue. Researched online and found numerous individuals expressing the same exact issue, particularly after 36K miles.
At random times while driving the "service shifter" will show on my dashboard. In order for me to get this to go away I have to pull over and turn my car off to reset the message. This does not guarantee the message doe not come back. This message will show up while driving on the highway or city streets.
The vehicle has had multiple problems since my purchase date issues with the sunroof which has continued to persist, as well as a strut, hub, strut assembly, electronic parking brake and also now that I have taken it in there are more problems arising and now I have a check engine light on service all brake system lights on and light and traction control light on and also a 4WD system unavailable light on after taking it in to get fixed and the dealership fixes one problem and more keep arising! the vehicle was parked and then when I turned it back in that's when the parking brake would not disengage and then the sunroof and popping sounds were happening while driving. The transmission issue is when I am driving it is shifting way to often and shifting very wonky. Then also when shift the transmission into gear it doesn't engage and then when it does it litterally could through you forward in your seat when it finally engages.
At 15,000 miles my service shifter light would turn on. I have to pull over, put the vehicle in park and shut off the vehicle. This happens at least once a month. When I called the dealership they said there was nothing they could do about it if the light wasn't actively on.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the gear shifter warning light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The contact pulled over and attempted to restart vehicle. Several warning lights on the instrument panel became illuminated. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The contact stated that the it seemed as if the vehicle was out of fuel even though the fuel tank was full. The vehicle was towed to griffin motors company 11031 perry hwy, meadville, pa 16335 (814) 336-2161, where a diagnostic test was still pending. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted nor notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 21,000. The VIN was not available.
While driving I got a 'service shifter ' message and all the lights on my shifter were lit up. I pulled over turned the car off and it went away. It happend again after my oil change at the dealership. It goes away after I restart the car but seems to be a safety problem but the dealership didn't think so. No message or lights after I restart but it has happened more than once.
The service shifter warning has come on multiple times over the past year. We have taken it to the dealer and have been told they can not find anything wrong. This has happened while driving at random speeds and driving conditions. It is now happening every time the Jeep is driven, sometimes before we even get to the end of the driveway.
"service shifter" error showed up on display while driving on expressway. Display was completely locked up and couldn't clear error. All of the shifter lights turned on. Had to turn engine off and back on to reset.
Driving down the rd service shifter light comes on, then pull over put car in park then the car just turns off in the middle of the rd. You have to crank and crank to get it started back while in the middle of the rd. I almost got run over on the highway where the speed limit is 65. I'm scared to drive my car for the fear of causing a accident and getting killed. I have a 8 year old daughter that O Transport daily. This is a safety issue and lots of others are having this problem when I googled what my car is doing.
Service shifter appeared on dash display and all indicators on shifter lit up. Vehicle had just been started upon leaving work. Vehicle was stationary. All indicators reset after turning vehicle off and back on after drive 5 miles.
