This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Jeep dealer.
CarComplaints.com Notes: There's no way around it, the Cherokee's transmission is junk. There's no other explanation for why a vehicle, usually with under 40,000 miles, would have so many complaints

fuel door freezing shut and won't open
In Dec 2015, I went to pull up to fuel. I pressed the button heard the solenoid to release the fuel door, so i got out to fuel only to find the door not open. I pulled it but nothing would happen. I went back three more times but it still would not open. I then had to manual open the door from inside the rear of the vehicle. I thought this was a once off thing. A week later I went to fuel again. it was froze shut again. I thought how could this be on a bright sunny day, where it has been sunny for a full week. once I got it open again i had a closer look and found that the door cover has separated a bit away from the bracket allowing water to get in behind the door and freeze it shut where the latch locks the door. I then took in to the nearest dealer to have it looked at further. They pulled it in and looked to find the same thing and informed me that the door cover had to be replaced. So I proceed with the repair. A couple weeks later it froze shut again. I did some research online to find that all over North America there are a lot of people having the same problem. I took the jeep back to the dealer and talk to the service manager. He and I went out to look at brand new jeeps on the store floor and their gas covers were tight. He said he have never header of this problem before but would look into it. He called me the next day and informed me that the mechanics said there has been a problem with the doors freezing shut but was no fix for it. He said he will send the pictures up to head quarters and inform them and let me know if any changes come down but for now there is nothing they can do. I had my jeep in a few weeks ago and informed on the status of the door covers. I was informed there is now 36 complaints at my dealer alone but still nothing has come out on how to fix the issue to make the door tight to prevent water from entering into the latch. I am currently still waiting for a fix to come down.
Update from Mar 22, 2016: In the picture you can see how the door has separated from the gasket at the top of the cover.
